A Message From the Editor
Listen to this article
By Michel Crépeau, CIH, ROH
Having recently been nominated by the academy council, I look forward to serving the academy membership as your Diplomate editor. This inaugural issue of the e-Diplomate brings an opportunity to expand our media capabilities. Although continuing to focus on its mission to inform occupational and environmental health and safety professionals of activities, programs, and priorities of the academy of Industrial Hygiene, the electronic Diplomate now opens up media content beyond traditional printed words and photographs. This is exemplified in this issue by giving the audience an option to read or listen to two of the articles. This humble beginning is intended solely to demonstrate the capability while we develop content for future issues. I look forward to your feedback on what you might like to see or “hear” in your Diplomate.
In this issue, John Mulhausen, academy president, presents a feature story on the academy’s role within the IH profession. You will find this article particularly enlightening on the contributions of CIHs to their profession. John’s analysis provides a compelling argument in support of seeking a CIH credential.
Lawrence Whitehead, academy councilor, contributes a historical perspective on how the academy joined and continues to support the ABET academic programs accreditation process. Many IH professionals graduated from an ABET accredited school to launch their career but all IH practitioners will appreciate the sustained effort by the academy to develop and maintain IH academic programs criteria under the ABET standard.
Daniel Agopsowicz, academy past president, provides an update on the academy-led project to explore the development of an EHS practitioners’ credential.
This issue’s guest column by Ernest Sullivan and Om Malik introduces a local flavor on control banding. Readers will not want to miss this innovative approach that incorporates Occupational Exposure Limit values in a decision matrix to select control measures.
In closing, I would like to thank Thomas C. Ouimet, academy councilor, for his insightful guidance on producing this issue. I look forward to our continuing collaboration towards the enhancement of internet based academy communications.
