OEHS-Related Scholarships

The following list is a summary of available scholarships for students in OEHS related majors and programs

American Industrial Hygiene Foundation

The American Industrial Hygiene Foundation's (AIHF) annual scholarship program awards scholarships to graduate and undergraduate students studying industrial hygiene. Since 1982, AIHF has distributed more than $900,000 to more than 45 universities and 356 students. Eligibility criteria has been expanded to include more schools. Any Student/Full/Associate member of AIHA who is attending an ABET-accredited IH graduate or undergraduate program, a NIOSH ERC IH program, or a CEPH accredited program with occupational health emphasis is eligible to apply. Deadline is March of every year.

Local AIHA Section Scholarships

The following is a brief listing of scholarships offered by AIHA local sections. To apply, contact the section board members.


NIOSH ERC Traineeships

Through university-based Education and Research Centers (ERCs), NIOSH supports academic degree programs and research training opportunities in the core areas of industrial hygiene, occupational health nursing, occupational medicine, and occupational safety, plus specialized areas relevant to the occupational safety and health field.

Sixteen different universities offer graduate traineeships that typically include tuition and a monthly stipend. For more information or application instructions, contact the ERC directly.

3M Industrial Hygiene Scholarship Program

The 3M Industrial Hygiene Scholarship Program signifies 3M’s commitment to quality education and training in the industrial hygiene profession. The program is designed to recognize the contributions and importance of proper safety and health practices in the workplace. Deadline for application is March of every year.

Six scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each will be awarded by 3M. Applicants must be currently enrolled in, or accepted into, a college or university industrial hygiene program. Special consideration will be given to graduate students and to those applicants who have relevant work experience and professional career goals.

The American Society of Safety Engineers

The American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation (ASSEF) has scholarships available for undergraduates and graduates studying occupational safety and health. Annual scholarships are available for students pursuing a degree in safety engineering, safety management, occupational health nursing, occupational medicine, risk management, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, fire safety, environmental safety, environmental health or other safety-related fields.

The foundation accepts scholarship applications until December 1 of every year. The undergraduate scholarships for students pursuing a degree in occupational safety include various UPS scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $6,000; two $1,000 Marsh Risk Consulting scholarships and the Thomas F. Bresnahan Distinguished Service Award scholarship, a $2,000 award. There are also three undergraduate scholarships and one graduate scholarship, each $3,375, from the Ford Motor Co., which is for women pursuing a degree in occupational safety and health. Both the Thompson Scholarship for Women in Safety, with a $1,000 award, and the James P. Kohn Memorial Scholarship, $2,000, are for students pursuing a graduate degree in occupational safety and health.

Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Division

The Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Division offers one $2,000 scholarship to encourage the study of environmental and occupational health, safety and related disciplines. The program is open to all undergraduate and graduate students in all majors/disciplines enrolled in 12 credit hours per semester, trimester, or quarter.

Voluntary Protection Programs Participants’ Association Scholarships

In an ongoing effort to advance the field of occupational safety and health, the VPPPA has established a scholarship program for VPPPA members and their families.

The June Brothers Scholarship is for students pursuing either an undergraduate or graduate degree in the safety/health/environmental field. This scholarship is open to students enrolled in or enrolling in a college or university. The application deadline is in May of every year.

Semiconductor Environmental Safety and Health Association

Semiconductor Environmental Safety and Health Association's academic program provides scholarships, training, and employment opportunities to graduate students enrolled in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, risk control, and environmental sciences programs.

Currently, SESHA is affiliated with 9 universities located across the United States. Graduate level students compete for scholarships in the amount of $1,500 by preparing a technical research paper on health, safety, or environmental related topics within the electronics and related high technology industries. Each university also receives a lecture tour consisting of informative presentations given by SESHA members who are considered experts in their fields.

National Safety Council

Billy D. Young is remembered through this scholarship for his many contributions to the National Safety Council, to safety in the utility industry and as a man who always gave his all to get things accomplished. The Billy D. Young scholarship is offered to those who are pursuing a degree in either safety or industrial hygiene and plan to go into the safety and or health fields after graduation. The scholarship award is $1,500 and applications are due in June.

Veterans of Safety Scholarship

The Veterans of Safety Scholarship award is named annually and the number and amount of the award will be determined by the Selection Committee. The recipient of this award must be enrolled as a full-time student for two consecutive enrollment periods and continue as a student in good standing. Graduate and undergraduate students can apply.

American Public Health Association, James P. Keogh Memorial Scholarship Fund

The American Public Health Association, Occupational Health and Safety Section will be awarding scholarships that include registration for the APHA Annual Meeting, a one-year membership in APHA and $300.00 for conference expenses. The value of each award is $500.00. The Section will directly pay the annual meeting fee & one-year membership to APHA with primary membership in the Occupational Health & Safety Section. Each awardee will then receive $300.00 that can be used to cover transportation, lodging, and meals. Awardees will be responsible for providing the remainder of funds necessary to cover these expenses. At the Annual Meeting we will pair each awardee with a section member with similar interests.

Student applicants should be enrolled in a graduate-level program that can lead to work in the occupational health & safety field. Eligible applicants must be students at the time of the Annual Meeting.

Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association Scholarship Program

The Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association endeavors to promote health and safety within the mining industry. This scholarship program is open to persons currently employed or who are pursuing careers in the mining industry, safety and health fields. Scholarship awards are available in the following categories: high school graduates, undergraduate students currently enrolled in a college or university and graduates of a college or university. The deadline is April of every year.

The Beno Memorial Student Scholarship Program

The Public Risk Management Association and Arthur J. Gallagher Risk Management Services have joined together to offer five scholarships to outstanding students in Risk Management and Occupational Safety related fields. The Beno Scholarship is reserved for one outstanding student majoring in Occupational Safety while 4 PRIMA Student Scholarships are open to any outstanding student majoring in the Risk Management. The Beno Memorial Scholarship Winner also receives an additional $2,000 scholarship. 

Mesothelioma Memorial Scholarships

Established in 2003, the $500 Mesothelioma Memorial Scholarships are offered four times per year to honor the thousands of people who have died from mesothelioma due to exposure to asbestos, as well as the thousands of patients who are newly diagnosed with the disease ever year. We offer one $500 scholarship every three months.

SafetyDoctor.com Scholarship Program

TheSafetyDoctor.com, Inc. will be awarding up to two $500 academic scholarships to students pursuing a degree in the field of safety who exhibit outstanding leadership, academic ability and commitment.   The recipients will be students in the United States who have demonstrated consistent academic achievement and active involvement in the promotion of safety. The award is intended to reward commitment to a field of study which will ultimately ensure a better life for everyone.

Applications will be accepted from January 1 until June 30. Applicant must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and must be a full-time student enrolled in an accredited two- or four-year college or university. Both undergraduate and graduate students welcome to apply.
