AIHA Updates Preamble to the Member Ethical Principles
FAIRFAX, VA (February 13, 2008) — The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) has updated the preamble to the Member Ethical Principles to reinforce the focus on the application of sound scientific principles and protecting workers’ health.
AIHA is dedicated to the promotion of healthy and safe environments by advancing the science, principles, practice, and value of industrial hygiene and occupational and environmental health and safety. AIHA members are expected to give priority to health and safety interests related to protecting workers and to act in a manner that promotes sound scientific principles and integrity and that is consistent with accepted moral, ethical, and legal standards.
AIHA, AIHA’s Academy of Industrial Hygiene (AIH), the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH), and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH®) have jointly shared a Code of Ethics since the mid-1980s. In 1995 and 2006, the four societies worked together to update the Code. In 1996, the Joint Industrial Hygiene Ethics Education Committee (JIHEEC) was formed with representatives from each of the societies to promote ethics education. JIHEEC has served the profession by bringing attention to ethical dilemmas facing industrial hygiene, while also serving as a sounding board for ethical challenges facing the profession.
