Auditing Health and Safety Management Systems
1.0 IH CM points, 0.8 CEUs, and 0.8 COCs
Prerequisites: Students should either have auditing experience, or their company should have some type of established auditing program; not necessarily a safety and health auditing program. A basic understanding of management principles or quality programs (e.g., VPP, TQM, or ISO 9000/14000) will be helpful.
Learning Outcomes: At the conclusion of the course students will be able to:
- Identify auditing techniques
- Differentiate between management and compliance audits
- Identify methods for assessment of S&H systems
- Demonstrate procedures for developing and assessing a management system
Who Will Benefit: Companies committed to being the best and who apply TQM, VPP, or ISO 9000/14000 certification principles. (The attendee will be presented with a system to apply these principles to S&H management.)
Companies considering or performing compliance audits. (A higher level of auditing—management system audits—will be explained.)
Course Specifics: The course is designed to provide knowledge that will familiarize the student with management and quality assurance principles. This includes knowledge in developing a safety and health management system, and a methodology to audit these safety and health management systems. Attendees will learn auditing techniques, will differentiate management systems audits from S&H compliance audits, and will explore a methodology for assessing the quality assurance of S&H management. Additional techniques, such interviewing and scoring employee or supervisor interviews, will be discussed. The course will also demonstrate procedures for developing a management system, reporting audits, base-lining, and scoring management systems along with graphic demonstrations of the audit results. The attendee will be presented with the S&H management system process and auditing methodology to achieve and maintain compliance, regardless of the management style of their company. Upon viewing the videos and completing program assignments, students will complete a final examination for CM points and CEUs.
