Nanoparticles in the Workplace: Assessing and Managing Risks

There are gaps in our understanding of how risk assessment and risk management approaches are functioning and can function in actual nanotechnology workplaces. This intermediate level course will provide practical guidance for matching appropriate controls and work practices to tasks involving a range of nanoparticle materials. The guidance approach uses a four-step process (hazard evaluation, exposure control, control verification and periodic reevaluation) to manage occupational risk by applying what we know in the face of uncertainties. Following a review of the hazards associated with exposure to nanoparticles, participants will be taken through an overview of risk assessment and the risk management approach, along with suggestions and case studies. Environmental Bacteria: Evaluating Exposure and Health Risks

With an emphasis on the IH experience, this course provides an excellent introduction to the environmental bacteria, their role in the natural environment and health effects that may occur with exposure. This course presents the latest information on such areas as Legionella and Legionnaires‘Disease, the hazards associated with sewage exposure, industrial exposures to bacteria, and the bacteriology of the residential environment. Students are also presented with applicable standards, rules and guidelines, while exploring the planning of environmental investigation and remediation protocols. Strategies for Minimizing Incidents in an Aging Work Force

Order this course

The course is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of the impact of aging on the workplace. Participants will be provided with demographic data and general information about how normal aging processes impact workers in their physical, cognitive, and psychosocial lives. Following a review of how the aging process might impact a typical workplace in terms of incidents and productivity losses, participants will be taken through a structured series of lectures and in-class exercises that will enable them to assess their own workplace environmental, health and safety programs. Following the assessment they will be given an opportunity to develop a strategic plan for their workplace and present it to the class for feedback. Get more information about this course.

Respiratory Protection Management: Current Issues

Order this course

Participants in this course will acquire a working knowledge of OSHA's Respiratory Protection Standard and related respiratory program tools. Emphasis will be placed on the practical aspects of day-to-day program management. Recent changes in legal and practical aspects of the standard (29CFR1910.134) have given rise to questions regarding implementation of this and related standards, although OSHA has published guidance documents. The course will present recognized elements for a respirator program compliant with 29CFR 1910.134 and information that can be used to assess the quality of the respirator manufacturer and the properties of the respirators currently available. The goal is to provide participants with information and resources needed to review, update, tailor, and manage respiratory programs for a variety of industrial and first responder environments.Get more information about this course.

Moisture Control, Mold, and the Science within the Building Envelope

Order this course

A thorough discussion of the elements that make up the building envelope, the science behind the envelope, and the forces acting on the envelope will be provided. This discussion is applicable to those assessing buildings for molds, IAQ, and general sick-building investigations. A building envelope is described in its three basic elements, each constructed differently to shed moisture. Moisture forces acting on the envelope will be discussed, including: controlled, induced, occupant loading, and others. Get more information about this course.
