Course Description

This three-day course is designed to prepare individuals for the comprehensive examination leading to certification as a CSP. The course covers the four areas of the exam: engineering, management, information management and communications, and professional conduct and ethics. The course consists of lectures, sample problems and discussions on a variety of subjects. Pertinent reference materials are also discussed to allow students to fine-tune their studies in specific areas prior to sitting for the exam. An outline for study will be provided.

Participants will be provided with an intensive review of the materials, skills and knowledge to enhance professional competencies in preparing for the comprehensive practice examination by:

  • Identifying certification requirements of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) for the CSP certification
  • Reviewing test-taking strategy, test format, scoring procedures and recent exam results  
  • Identifying the principal reference materials available to prepare for the comprehensive practice examination
  • Discussing the range and scope of information covered in the comprehensive practice examination
  • Using a testing format to review content materials
  • Providing an opportunity to practice solving analytical (math) problems
  • Identifying limitations in exam preparation

Note: You must pass the ASP fundamentals exam or hold the designation of certified industrial hygienist (CIH) before sitting for the CSP exam.

Learning Outcomes

  • Review details and current blueprints of the test subjects
  • Practice problems in class
  • Review suggested readings and study aids and identify areas for further study
  • Discuss the application of appropriate materials, theories and management practices to safety, health and environmental situations  

Prerequisites

Advanced class.  Working knowledge of one and two variable statistics, chemistry, biology and engineering principles, and an understanding of probability.

Learning Aid: Scientific calculator required (TI 30X IIS, TI 30X Multi-view or equivalent).

Course Instructors

C. David Langlois, CSP, is president of Langlois, Weigand, and Associates Inc. He holds a BS in industrial technology from LSU and a master’s in business administration. He has 20+ years of experience in the safety and training field and is a certified safety professional. He has taught professional development courses in safety inspections, accident investigations, industrial hygiene, safety audits, hazard recognition, substance abuse awareness and safety management. He has presented programs at several regional and national conferences.

Michael A. Weigand, CSP, EdD, is vice president of Langlois, Weigand and Associates Inc. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the safety and health career field and has been a CSP since 1979. Dr. Weigand has taught courses in occupational safety, safety management, industrial hygiene, fire science and safety law at LSU. He has conducted professional seminars on safety and health audits, safety management, and safety training. He has served as a management consultant and expert witness.

Agenda

Day 1 - Monday, October 6

  • Introduction
  • Probability, statistics, engineering economy – brief review of definitions, concepts and practice problems to be used throughout the course. Also includes review of test application and testing procedures and review materials available for study 
  • Safety, health and environmental engineering – Practice problems and discussions for engineering, science, physics and ergonomics

Day 2 - Tuesday, October 7

  • Safety, health and environmental engineering , continued
  • Safety, health and environmental management – management principles, concepts, definitions and applications through sample questions and class discussion

Day 3 - Wednesday, October 8

  • Safety, health and environmental information management and communication – review includes training, measurement of training, communication basics, and computer hardware and software applications including Internet applications
  • Professional Conduct and Ethics – discussion of sample problems

Room blocks expire 30 days prior to the course start date; after this date, rooms will be subject to the regular rate and availability. Transfers, Substitutions, and Cancellations

All transfers, cancellations, and/or substitutions must be received in writing by the Continuing Education Department. Transfers can be made at any time to any course within the same calendar year. Substitutions may be made at any time. Cancellations made 15 business days prior to the course will be given a full refund. Cancellations made within 15 days of the course will be charged a $75 processing fee. No refunds will be given if notice of cancellation is not received prior to the start of the course, including no-shows.
