Local Section FAQs

What Is a Local Section?

Local section is the term used by AIHA to designate regional chapters (to view a list of regional chapters and their websites, please click here).  AIHA, the premier occupational health and safety association, has 69 local sections throughout the United States, and 6 international sections.  Since each region may have their own special concerns, the activities of one local section may vary from another.  However, the purpose of each local section remains the same:

  • Protect the health and safety of workers and the community;
  • Increase knowledge of industrial hygiene and occupational health and safety in a specific region;
  • Promote the profession and cooperate with government, industrial, educational, and other professional bodies; and
  • Share a concern about the health of workers worldwide as well as the special concerns of your regional area.

Why Join a Local Section?

Membership in an AIHA local section provides you with a wide range of networking opportunities in the occupational health and safety field. You can stay abreast of the latest developments in the field.

Membership in a local section will do more than just keep you informed, it provides you with a total spectrum of activities that enhance your professional growth, while promoting the occupation health and safety field.  AIHA national membership is not required, but membership in both organizations is strongly encouraged to maximize your benefits.  Just look at the opportunities our local sections can offer you:

  • Network at professional meetings;
  • Move ahead at career fair displays;
  • Update your knowledge at symposia on current occupational health topics;
  • Take advantage of numerous professional development opportunities;
  • Meet with allied professional groups;
  • Recognize excellence in the field through award selections and presentations; and
  • Promote the future of industrial hygiene by sponsoring student local sections and scholarship programs

What if I Am a Student?

If you are an undergraduate or graduate student interested in the industrial hygiene profession and are looking for a way to get more involved in the profession or are interested in networking with peers and occupational
health and safety professionals, AIHA’s Student Local Section can help.

How Do I Join?

Call AIHA at (703) 846-0768 or e-mail for information on how to contact the local section directly.

Can I Form a New Local or Student Section?

If you are interested in forming a local section or student section, in an area where one does not exist, please contact AIHA’s Local Section relations manager at (703) 849-8888 for details.
