Engineering Committee

The mission of the committee is:

To provide a forum to advance the use of engineering principles for the prevention and control of health hazards and to address emerging issues in support of AIHA interests.

    Goals and Objectives

    Goal: Assemble, evaluate, and disseminate industrial hygiene information regarding engineering aspects.

    Objective #1: Provide education, training, and reference materials on engineering control technologies.

    Strategies:

    • Monitor engineering committee-sponsored PDCs and arrange for the introduction of new PDCs.
    • Solicit papers; organize sessions; and provide session arrangers, chairs, and monitors for the AIHce.
    • Revise AIHA publications.
    • Develop new reference materials for AIHA publications.

    Objective #2: Coordinate and communicate engineering control and technology information and issues.

    Strategies:

    • Act as a technical resource by researching issues and recommending positions to the AIHA Board.
    • Coordinate with other industries, government agencies, professional associations, trade associations, labor groups, academia, and others to share information and discuss engineering issues.
    • Communicate and coordinate with other AIHA committees that may be affected by engineering committee initiatives.
    • Maintain expertise to provide guidance on the application of engineering controls in the workplace.
    • Meet at the AIHce and other times as appropriate to discuss committee initiatives.

    Objective #3: Promote and recognize achievement in engineering aspects of industrial hygiene.

    Strategies:

    • Review the JOEH for engineering aspects papers and select the AIHA Engineering Committee Best Paper Award.

    • During the AIHce, review and select the AIHA Engineering Committee Best Poster Award.
    • Develop and distribute a fact sheet on engineering aspects of industrial hygiene targeted to engineering (chemical, environmental, mechanical, and industrial) students and graduates.
