NIOSH 582 Equivalency Courses
AIHA Approved NIOSH 582 Equivalency Courses
The American Industrial Hygiene Association does not endorse or recommend any specific NIOSH 582 equivalency course. However, since the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) discontinued its offering of the NIOSH 582 course for Sampling and Evaluating Airborne Asbestos Dust, it has become increasingly difficult to find the equivalency course that is necessary for PCM analysts to comply with OSHA regulations.
In an attempt to aid analysts in finding NIOSH 582 Equivalency courses in their area, AIHA offers to maintain a list of courses whose content and instructors’ qualifications have met the minimum recommended requirements for a NIOSH 582 Equivalency course. These minimum recommended requirements have been determined by the LQAP's volunteer Technical Advisory Panel (TAP). Course review and approval is also determined by a member of TAP.
To have your course reviewed and listed as an AIHA approved course, please submit the completed application below. There is a nominal fee for processing your application, as delineated on the application. Your course information will be reviewed by a member of our Technical Advisory Panel.
Upon approval, you will receive notification and your course will be listed as an AIHA approved NIOSH 582 Equivalency course. This approval process is available for both commercial and in-house courses. Analysts, organizations or laboratories seeking accreditation or AAR approval are not required to attend courses approved by AIHA. However, the AAR policies (AAR Policy 2.1.1) and the IHLAP policies (Laboratory Accreditation Policy 2B.5.1.2) allow for a certificate of completion from an approved course to be acceptable as evidence of NIOSH 582 equivalent training.
Organizations, analysts or laboratories, seeking application approval in the AAR or laboratory accreditation, submitting a certificate of completion for a NIOSH 582 equivalent training course, not on the list of AIHA recognized courses, are required to submit a description of the course as evidence of equivalent training. The description must include dates of training, course outline, contact hours, and record of examination.

- AIHA’s Minimum Requirements for a NIOSH 582 Equivalency Course
The requirements for approval by AIHA of a NIOSH 582 Equivalency course are currently being evaluated. You may still submit your application at this time; however, your course will not be reviewed until these requirements are determined. If your course does not meet the minimum requirements, you will be notified of any deficiencies and given 30 days to respond and address the deficiencies.
AAR Policy 2.1.1.3 - Maintenance of AIHA Recognized 582 Course Listing, indicates that “once every three years, providers of recognized courses must provide update information, as requested by the AIHA, to demonstrate that the course is current and still meets the requirements for NIOSH 582 equivalency. Failure to respond to the request for update information may result in the removal of the course from the AIHA listing of recognized courses.” The 2007 NIOSH 582 Equivalency Course Update is due by May 1, 2007.
A NIOSH 582 Equivalency course list that contains historical information for courses that are no longer offered or courses that did not respond to the update is currently maintained as an internal document. As is a list of NIOSH 582 Equivalency courses that are in-house only or have request to not be listed on the website. If you have any questions regarding these lists please contact the AAR Program Specialist.
