FAQs: International Affiliate Membership

Why did AIHA create the international affiliate membership?

The AIHA Board of Directors proposed a change to the AIHA bylaws to create an international affiliate membership category, and AIHA members approved it in the spring of 2007. The international affiliate membership supports the AIHA strategic objective to “strengthen AIHA’s collaborations with national and international industrial hygiene and related occupational and environmental health and safety professional organizations to facilitate the protection of workers and communities and to strengthen and unify the voice and impact of the professional community.”

Who is eligible to become an international affiliate member?

An international affiliate member is defined as an individual who resides in, and is a citizen of, a country classified by the World Bank as a low-income, lower-middle-income or upper-middle-income economy, and who is practicing occupational and environmental health and safety.

If I am eligible to become (or currently belong as) a full member of AIHA but also qualify to become an international affiliate member, can I still join as (or remain) a full member?

Yes. If you are eligible for full membership and you also meet the eligibility requirements for international affiliate membership, you may choose between the two classes of membership. Similarly, if you are already a full member, you will remain so unless you request to convert your membership to the new international affiliate membership.

Who is eligible for full membership in AIHA?

A full member must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution in industrial hygiene or a related discipline. In addition, full members must have worked a majority of time for at least three years in industrial hygiene or occupational and environmental health and safety.

What are the benefits of the international affiliate membership?

International affiliate member benefits include:

How does the international affiliate membership differ from other classes of membership?

International affiliate members are not eligible to vote or be elected to the board of directors. International affiliate members also generally do not receive postal mail from AIHA but instead access many benefits online.

What does international affiliate membership cost?

Dues for international affiliate membership are currently $44 per year (one-fourth the price of full membership).

Why aren’t international affiliate members eligible to vote or serve on the AIHA Board of Directors?
The international affiliate membership is offered at a greatly reduced price, yet it retains most of the benefits of full membership. While the right to vote in AIHA elections and to serve on the Board of Directors are important benefits, they also represent great value to full members of the association. For these reasons, the AIHA Board of Directors voted to reserve these benefits for full members only.
