Mold The key role of AIHA members in our society is protecting individuals from exposure to hazardous substances, (i.e., lead, asbestos, noise, radiation, biological chemicals) including exposure to fungi and other potentially hazardous microorganisms, commonly referred to as “mold”. Molds are ubiquitous in the environment, and can be found almost anywhere samples are taken. It is not known, however, what quantity of mold is acceptable in indoor environments with respect to health. For these reasons, and because individuals have different sensitivities to molds, setting standards and guidelines for indoor mold exposure levels is difficult and may not be practical.
AIHA has several resources available related to mold including the new mold guidelines. Completed by the AIHA Indoor Environmental Quality, Biosafety and Environmental Microbiology, and Law Committees, the "Assessment, Remediation, and Post-Remediation Verification of Mold in Buildings"describes a range of methodologies and techniques currently available to conduct assessments of mold growth in residential and commercial buildings.
In addition, AIHA technical committees offer the “Field Guide for the Determination of Biological Contaminants in Environmental Samples” and are diligently working on the “Mold Green Book”. For more information on these products, or to place an order, contact customer service at (703) 849-8888.
