Descriptions / Duties / Responsibilities

This position performs duties within the field of Industrial Hygiene to support the Environmental Health Program at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) and Patrick Air Force Base (PAFB).  The position must be able to independently recognize and evaluate health hazards and recommend corrective actions, such as engineering controls. Must understand the use and operation of various types of  industrial hygiene instruments such as; sound level meters, velometers, multi-gas meters, fixed monitoring systems, integrated air sampling equipment, etc.   Must be familiar with NIOSH/OSHA sampling methodology, OSHA & ANSI standards, ACGIH documents, and other references pertinent to industrial hygiene. Position ensures compliance with specific Federal, State, NASA, or Air Force regulations and program or contractual requirements to preserve the health and safety of persons within the KSC/CCAFS/PAFB environment, working within the limits of standard or accepted practice.

·  Conduct industrial hygiene surveys, collect and prepare samples for analysis, collect, analyze and interpret data, prepare reports, update applicable databases and maintain records.

· Performs any range of program related launch support activities before, during or after launch as prescribed by program or contractual requirements, including monitoring for various toxic, explosive or oxygen deficient atmospheres.

· Responds to incidents and emergency situations within area of expertise and work within standard operating procedures or as directed to protect and preserve the health and safety of persons in the area and to reduce exposure and impact. Conducts interviews and prepares related reports as required.

· Performs a range of hazard evaluations and abatement activities related to designated area of specialty.

· Performs range of administrative duties required to fulfill program or contractual requirements related to designated area of specialty, including record keeping, inventory maintenance, supply requisition, library maintenance, database maintenance and similar duties as assigned.

· Prepares, sets up, calibrates and operates electronic or mechanical sample collection or testing devices as required to perform program responsibilities.

· Cleans and maintains field operating and collection equipment and devices to ensure proper operation. Maintains field supplies.

· Performs or assists with any departmental operations, as required or directed to maintain workflow or respond to emergency conditions.

· Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition. Ensures safe operating conditions within area of responsibility. Performs other related duties as assigned.

· Properly manages by-products, which may include hazardous wastes, resultant from workplace activities. Specific responsibilities may include proper waste segregation, containerization, handling, and responding to emergencies in a manner consistent with company policies/procedures and site-specific workplace instructions.

· Properly manages colorimetric indicator tubes and ensure the proper disposal (potentially hazardous waste) of used tubes.

· Field and laboratory equipment including various meters, calibration devices, pumps, vehicles, computers, usual peripherals and common office equipment will be used.
