STUDENTS SEEKING INTERNSHIPS:
Stony Brook University's School of Health Technology and Management
is looking to place EH&S students in the field. These students
are graduating seniors and are available for internships from early
February until mid-May. Their areas of interest are in the
following disciplines:
Industrial Safety Engineering / Occupational Safety
Industrial Hygiene / Occupational Health
Radiation Safety / Health Physics
Fire Protection / Fire Safety
Environmental Management (Air/Water/Soil)
Waste Management
Emergency Management
The students are typically available in 1/2 day blocks, but many are
available for full days (this must be coordinated through the
individual students) They are required to complete a minimum
of 90 hours of internship by graduation in May. There is no

Laboratory Safety Manager opening in EHS at Weill Cornell Medical
College (WCMC) in New York City. We would like to have the position
posted on the AIHA-Metro New York Section’s Jobs website. This
is a new position created to coordinate all laboratory safety
activities at WCMC. An important responsibility of this position
will be the supervision/mentoring of all lab-safety staff in EHS. It
is an exciting time at WCMC. We are a 22-person department that
covers environmental health and safety for all educational,
clinical, research, and administrative operations. We have over 1000
laboratories and have 500,000ft2 of new laboratory space currently

Description
Under
the general direction of the Deputy Director or the Director, the
selected candidate will be responsible to ensure that all Requests
for Services are complete and accurate prior to acceptance, will
assign tasks to project managers and ensure that all deliverables
are on time.
Duties
will include: managing the work product of 4 environmental Project
Managers, Contractors and Consultants for technical accuracy,
completeness, timeliness and cost effectiveness, and reviewing all
capital project design documents to determine the assignment of
hazardous materials assessment surveys to project managers.
In addition to performing the above mentioned tasks, the
candidate will
conduct
field visits, directly manage hazardous materials projects of
various levels of complexity, respond to environmental/hazardous
materials incidents, and develop remedial actions to mitigate
hazards and ensure compliance with Federal, NYS and NYC regulations.
Also
required is the review of sampling protocols, interpretation of
analytical results, comparing data to regulatory standards, writing
technical reports, and when needed, writing abatement
specifications, and ensuring regulatory forms and closeout reports
are properly prepared to ensure compliance.
Additionally, the candidate will represent the Bureau at
meetings with Program Units, Mayoral Agencies, Regulatory Agencies,
etc., and prepare periodic project status reports for the bureau, as
well as to present upper management with status reports on Bureau
task assignments.
Qualification Requirements
1. A
baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in engineering,
architecture, landscape architecture, business administration, or
public administration, and five years of full-time satisfactory
experience in the planning, administering or expediting of
engineering, design, and/or construction, or coordinating a very
large engineering project, two years of which must have been in an
administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory capacity; or
2. A
four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and nine
years of experience as described in "1" above; two years of which
must have been in an administrative, managerial, executive or
supervisory capacity; or
3.
Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. An
accredited Master's degree in one of the disciplines described in
"1" above, a law degree, or a valid New York State license as a
Professional Engineer or Registered Architect or Landscape Architect
may be substituted for one year of the required experience. However,
all candidates must have the two years of the administrative,
managerial, executive or supervisory experience as described in "1"
above.
NYC
RESIDENCY IS NOT REQUIRED.
Essential Skills
A
minimum of ten years experience in Hazardous Materials management,
specifically asbestos, lead and mold survey, remediation design and
oversight for a construction firm, city agency or private company is
desired, as well as four years supervisory experience.
Preference will be given to those candidates with strong
knowledge of federal, state and city construction, Environmental
Health and Safety regulations and those with a NYS Department of
Labor License as an Asbestos Inspector, Designer or Management
Planner, NYCDEP Asbestos Investigator License, USEPA Lead Inspector/
Risk Assessor License and OSHA HAZWOPER & 30 hour OSHA Construction
Safety certification.
Certification by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (CIH) or
the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (CSP) is a plus.
Good communication and computer skills (Microsoft Word,
Excel, Access, GIS) preferred.

Description
Under
the general direction of the Section Chief, Deputy Director or the
Director, the selected candidate will conduct and oversee
geotechnical field inspections to identify, evaluate and perform
soil classifications of environmental and geotechnical borings on
assigned capital projects to ensure
compliance with the federal, state and local regulations and ASTM
standards. Specifically, the selected candidate will review field
logs and record of borings (ROBs) for accuracy and to ensure
compliance with the NYCDOB codes: review and approve Final ROBs;
review and analyze laboratory data and
determine if analytical results exceed regulatory thresholds; review
and approve final environmental reports to ensure compliance with
applicable environmental federal, state and local regulations and
DDC guidelines. The candidate will also be responsible for the
review of fee proposals, work orders
and
invoices to ensure work is performed in accordance with the specific
contract requirements.
Qualification Requirements
A. A
baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with a major in
geology, engineering, earth sciences, environmental sciences, or a
closely related field, including or supplemented by 24 semester
credits in any of the following areas: rock and soil mechanics;
structural geology; soils; sedimentation;
petrology; hydrology; hydrogeology; geomorphology; subsurface
explorations; mining; engineering; mapping; surveying; site
investigations; geologic field work; or closely related areas; and
B. At
least one course involving geologic field work or three months of
satisfactory, full-time professional geologic field experience
obtained during the course of, or after completing, the
baccalaureate education.
To be
eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, individuals must
have, after meeting the minimum requirements described in Assignment
Level I, at least two years of satisfactory service as a Geologist
AL I with the City of New York; or
B. At
least three years of satisfactory, full-time professional experience
in geology, engineering, earth sciences, environmental sciences, or
a closely related field. One year of this experience must include
the provision of geologic consultation or the supervision or
performance monitoring of persons involved in geologic activity; or
C. A
satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience. A
master degree from an accredited college with a major in one of the
fields listed
in
“Assignment Level I - Qualification Requirement A” above may be
substituted for two years of the AL II professional experience. A
master degree from an accredited college in management, public
administration, business administration, or a closely related field
may be substituted for the one year of
consultative or supervisory experience described above.
A Motor
Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York is required.
This License must be maintained throughout the duration of
employment.
Essential Skills
Candidate retains the following valid certificates: OSHA 40 hour
Hazwoper; OSHA 10 and 30 hour Construction Safety Certificate;
A minimum of five years of geotechnical field inspection
and/environmental experience in NYC.
Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local
environmental regulations, specifically: NYCDOB, NYSDEC, NYCDEP,FHWA,

master’s degree in environmental science or civil engineering
