Message from the President

August 2010 President’s Message

Thank you for the opportunity of serving as President this year.  As some of you might know, I had to leave the President-Elect position at the end of the 1992 year to help teach industrial hygiene in Central America.  This year, I hope that I can continue with the excellent work of Vickie Bender, Past President, as well as all past officers.

I look forward to working with the Executive Board.  We have already had some productive discussions planning this year’s program. Sue Flappan, Secretary last year, returns as President-Elect. John McCall continues as Treasurer. Board members include Vickie Bender as well as Eric Wenger, John Zey and Tonyea Inglis.  I would like to thank all of them for their great work and for volunteering to continue this year.  I am grateful for their knowledge and support.

Because Sue Flappan was appointed to the office of President-Elect, the Secretary position is open.  If you are interested in becoming part of the leadership of this section, please contact us at the local section email.  This is your opportunity to contribute to your profession, and meet some interesting people in the meantime.

I learned recently that workplace deaths decreased in 2009.  Unfortunately, much of this decrease can be attributed to major job losses last year.  Almost never mentioned are illnesses and deaths caused by exposures to the environment – both old and new chemical products, indoor air quality and mold, the list is long.  Our profession is more relevant than ever, both in and outside of the workplace.  A report in JAMA last week found that that one in every five teenagers now has at least a slight hearing loss.  It encourages me that members of our local section still hold the cause of health and safety as our priority.

Please feel free to contact me at my email, ntap@igc.org with your ideas on future topics, tours, speakers or other activities.  I look forward to working with you to promote the Industrial Hygiene profession.
