Message from the President
August 2009 President’s Message
Welcome back to the 2009-2010
membership year of the Mid America AIHA local section.
New local section leadership includes Greg Lemke as President-Elect, John
McCall as Treasurer, Susan Flappan as Secretary, and Tonyea Inglis as Board
member. Returning Board members
include Eric Wenger and Steve Ratliff.
I would like to give a big Thanks
to John Zey for the great job he did last year leading this local section.
He will continue to contribute for another year as Past President.
I also want to thank Saundra Harris for the outstanding job performing
the duties of Treasurer for the past 2 years.
She was an excellent steward for the Local Section funds.
As a reminder, the goals of the Mid
America AIHA Local Section are:
·
To promote the study, evaluation, and control of environmental stresses arising
in, or from the work place or its products, in relation to the health or
well-being of workers and the public.
·
To promote the profession through the encouragement of interest within, and
cooperation with governmental, industrial, educational, and other professional
bodies.
·
To increase the knowledge of occupational and environmental health through
interchange and dissemination of information, and to bring together persons
interested in the various phases of industrial and environmental health.
The first meeting will be a joint meeting with the Heart of America
ASSE chapter on September 14 with guest speaker Richard Fairfax who is the OSHA
Director of Enforcement.
For those members who are Certified
Industrial Hygienists, there is a new 2010 requirement for CM points in the area
of “ethics”. The Local Section has
purchased the CD for the AIHA Distance Learning Program “Professional Ethics,
Doing What is Right in the Practice of Industrial Hygiene” that was presented
live on August 4, 2009.
This CD will be presented during a meeting on
September 29, 2009. The
test and the $35 application fee for 0.33 CM points are due on October 5.
Additional topics being considered are
Nanoparticle Safety, Expert Testimony, Crisis Communication, and a IH Sampling
Methods workshop.
Please feel free to contact me (525-4251
evenings) if you have suggestions for meeting topics, speakers, tours, or other
activities that can promote Industrial Hygiene as a profession.
