The Wenzel-McKee Memorial Scholarship

Merged in 2008, individual scholarships were created in 1992, as a memorial to James Wenzel and J. Douglas McKee. This combined scholarship is available to students pursuing a graduate degree at a Northwest Ohio College or University in the fields of Public Health, Occupational Health or Industrial Hygiene.

James Wenzel was very supportive of Stephen Hall's efforts to get the MS in Industrial Hygiene program at MCO heading in the right direction. Dr. Wenzel attended many of the NWO-AIHA's early meetings. Jim Wenzel also worked at Plaskon Products when it was part of Allied Chemical's Specialty Chemical Division in the early to mid-1970s. Jim held safety responsibilities. We believe that Jim left Allied Chemical (Plaskon) about 1975 and joined OSHA as a Safety Compliance Officer. Jim held an MD (Podiatry) degree. Jim died of cancer in August of 1992.

Douglas McKee was a founding member of the NWO-AIHA serving as its fourth president. Doug McKee in the early 1980’s, worked for OSHA as a IH Compliance Officer. In 1981, Doug left OSHA and took a position at Plaskon, a specialty chemical company located across Glendale Avenue from the Medical College of Ohio. Doug stayed at Plaskon for a couple of years, eventually forming his own EHS consulting business. After a couple of years, he then "sold" his business to SSOE, Inc. Doug worked for SSOE as an IH and safety consultant until his death from an auto accident on July 27, 1991.
