Membership categories in AIHA are based on education and work experience in industrial hygiene and occupational and environmental health and safety. New members are assigned a membership category based on the information provided in their application. Members can request an upgrade at any time when criteria are met.
Individuals holding a baccalaureate degree in industrial hygiene, chemistry, physics, engineering, biology, or other approved discipline from an accredited institution of higher education and has been engaged a majority of time for at least three years in industrial hygiene or occupational and environmental health and safety activities.
Applicants who do not have a qualifying baccalaureate degree may substitute experience on the basis of two years of qualifying experience for one year of undergraduate education. Full-time graduate study in one of the disciplines listed above may be accepted on an equivalent time basis for any portion of the required three years of experience.
Individuals who are a graduate of an accredited institution of higher learning, holding an associate degree in industrial hygiene, chemistry, physics, engineering, biology, or other approved discipline, who is currently engaged a majority of time in industrial hygiene or occupational and environmental health and safety activities.
Applicants who do not have an acceptable degree may substitute experience on the basis of two years of qualifying experience for one year of undergraduate education.
Individuals who are employed in an allied profession or has interest in or supports the industrial hygiene profession or other related professions and do not meet the requirements for Full or Associate membership.
Individuals who are employed in industrial hygiene or the occupational and environmental health and safety profession and are 30 years of age or under. Young Professional members receive the same benefits as Associate members. Applicants must provide their date of birth.
Individuals who resides in, and is a citizen of, a country defined by the World Bank as a low-income, lower-middle-income, or upper middle-income economy, and who is practicing occupational and environmental health and safety.

Individuals enrolled at the college undergraduate or graduate level taking at least one-half the credit hours required for full-time status. Submission of a statement from the individual's faculty advisor confirming enrollment status is required.
Retired membership is reserved for current Full or Associate members who are no longer actively employed (defined as less than 10% of the time) in the practice of industrial hygiene or occupational and environmental health and safety.
