Notes:
The work that I am presenting to you today was carried out to re-evaluate the EH 54 method, in preparation for its revision, and as a prelude to proposing the development of a European and International Standard on Fume Data Sheets.
If the EH 54 method is to work satisfactorily, it is essential that the chemical composition of the collected sample is the same as the welding fume composition given on the Material Safety Data Sheet. For this to be the case, fume composition has to be reasonably independent of welding parameters such as current and voltage, as these will vary in practice.
Secondly, the welding fume composition data given on MSDSs has to be both accurate and complete.
And thirdly, other airborne particles (from grinding etc) must not be present in high concentrations or they could exert a significant confounding influence on results.
