Notes:
Welding fume samples collected in the laboratory were generated by mechanised welding in a fume box. The rig used for MMA welding was of in-house construction and semi-mechanised in operation. MAG and FCAW was mechanised using a commercially available traverse.
The metal content of the welding fume samples was determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and/or inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry.
Where appropriate, the welding fume samples were also analysed spectrophotometry, by HSE method MDHS 61, to determine hexavalent chromium; and using the ion selective electrode (ISE) method described in MDHS 35/2 to determine fluoride.
