Notes:
To summarise the results of the welding parameter tests:
Replicate results for individual test samples showed good repeatability, better than ± 5 %, and this demonstrated that the analytical methods used were suitable for distinguishing relatively small differences in fume composition. Likewise, the between-test reproducibility was also typically better than 5 %, giving confidence in the ability to reproduce welding conditions giving the same fume composition.
Voltage was the parameter exerting the greatest effect on welding fume composition, but many of the parameters investigated had little effect at all, so that overall the variation in fume composition under different welding conditions was fairly small, typically less than 20 %.
The results obtained were used to make some preliminary recommendations for future generation of welding fume composition data. These ideas have been developed further in recent European standards meetings, and I’ll say a little more about this later.
