This figure shows the effect of foreign dust on the chromium content of airborne particles to which a welder is exposed. The chromium content of the sample is on the y-axis and the chromium content of welding fume from the MSDS is on the x-axis. The gradient is significantly less than unity, indicating that the chromium content of the dust is significantly less than the welding fume, which is not unexpected. Similar plots are obtained for nickel, manganese and other alloyed metals, but the gradient of the plot for iron was near unity, showing that the iron content of the dust and welding fume was not dissimilar.
