In the 1990s, all the costs related to workers’ compensation rose – although the actual numbers of lost-time injuries actually decreased. Working with insurance carriers, benefit offices, and state legislators, many occupational and environmental medicine physicians were able to bring a different approach to the management of these spiraling costs – managed care. This involved cost management, appropriate use of alternative work (sometimes called “limited duty”), and enhanced communications.
