Now switch gears with and lets look at the primary organization that represents occupational physicians today.
What is now the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine came into existence nearly 90 years ago when, in 1916, a group of physicians came together to form the American Association of Industrial Physicians and Surgeons (AAIP&S).
The organization was created to foster the study and discussion of the problems peculiar to the practice of industrial medicine and surgery; to develop methods adopted to the conservation of health among workmen in the industries; to promote a more general understanding of the purposes and results of the medical care of employees; and to unite into one organization members of the medical profession specializing in industrial medicine and surgery for their mutual advancement in the practice of their profession.
In 1951, the organization became the Industrial Medical Association. The new name reflecting that membership was not limited to the American continent.
