Passports

U.S. Citizens –

All individuals (including children regardless of age) traveling by air, land, or sea are required to show a passport to enter Canada and enter/re-enter the United States.

Exception: U.S. citizens entering Canada by car or rail who plan to return to the U.S. prior to June 1, 2009 do not need to show a passport, but proof of citizenship is required. However, as of June 1, ALL individuals will be required to hold a valid passport to enter/re-enter the United States.

Take Note:

  • To be valid, a passport cannot expire within 6 months of travel dates.
  • To apply for a passport, visit the U.S. State Department, www.travel.state.gov; allow 6-8 weeks for processing.
  • U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must provide a valid passport. A visa is not required for U.S. citizens for a stay up to 180 days.

Non-Canadian/Non-U.S. Citizens –

All individuals (including children regardless of age) traveling by air, land, or sea are required to show a passport to enter Canada and enter/re-enter country of origin.

Non-U.S. residents may need to obtain a visa to enter Canada; see www.canadavisa.com. Individuals should apply for a visa as soon as possible, but no later than March, 2009.

Customs, Duties, and General Information

Customs Declarations must be completed before entering Canada and prior to returning to country of origin. Goods for personal use are exempt from duty provided they are declared upon entry and are carried back. Generally, small electronics including laptop computers do not need to be registered before departing country of origin.
