Course Description

Developed in accordance with the international module syllabus W501–Measurement of Hazardous Substances the goal of this course is to provide students with a sound understanding of the techniques for assessing exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace and with an understanding of how exposure information can be used to assess risk.  Students will have the opportunity to explore case studies, review occupational chemical health risk assessment, perform atmospheric monitoring and measure airborne contaminants.  Additionally they will be equipped with skills for selecting appropriate equipment and creating a sampling strategy they can apply in their own practice.  The use of with illustrative examples will also provide guidance as to how principles should be applied in order to comply with relevant legislation as well as discuss and present ways of positively impacting and improving worker health and safety to management.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the general approach to health risk assessment, including the role of atmospheric monitoring;
  • Select appropriate equipment to measure specific airborne contaminants and devise a suitable sampling strategy
  • Present the results in a form useful for health risk assessment purposes to enable management to comply with relevant legislation.

Course Director

Mark Katchen is the managing principal for The Phylmar Group, Inc. with expertise in industrial hygiene, toxicology, occupational health, risk communication and sustainable supply chain practices. He received his BA in psychobiology from UCLA, MS in environmental and occupational health from California State University, Northridge, and MBA from Loyola Marymount University. Mr. Katchen has more than 30 years of experience in occupational and environmental exposure assessment in such industries as petrochemical, agriculture, mining, utilities and automotive. Additionally, he is a certified industrial hygienist and a State of California registered environmental assessor. Mr. Katchen has taught at the University of California Los Angeles and Irvine campuses and is adjunct graduate faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Public Health. He also serves on the CSUN Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Advisory Board. Mr. Katchen is a past chair of the American Industrial Hygiene Association’s International Affairs Committee. He is a frequent lecturer to business and academic groups on environmental risk assessment, management, communication, and sustainable business practices and is the author of several published technical and business-related articles.

Instructors

Lan (Ellen) Liu is a Senior Industrial Hygienist in the Environ’s Beijing China office. Liu has over 20 years of comprehensive experience in occupational health and industrial hygiene, compliance auditing, management, air quality monitoring, exposure assessment, as well as health and safety issues for hazardous waste sites and a variety of other industrial sectors.

Prior to joining Environ, Liu was an Associate Professor with the Beijing Center of Preventive Medicine and Center for Occupational Diseases Control (CDC). A recognized expert in the occupational health community, she is involved in China's physical factors, ergonomics and occupational health pre-assessment academic community. She is also an AIHA member.

Victor Liu, PhD, CIH, CSP, is a senior project director with EnSafe Inc., a global environmental and occupational safety and health consulting firm.  He has authored articles dealing with safety and health issues and been invited to speak at various health and safety events in Asia, Mexico, Ecuador, and the United States.  Lui served as a Chair of International Affairs Committee for the American Industrial Hygiene Association and as an overseas advisor to Taiwan’s Industrial Safety and Health Association.

He holds a PhD in Public Heath with a major in Industrial Hygiene and a minor in Biocybernetics from the University of California, Los Angeles.  Lui did his postdoctoral training at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, at New York University.  He has held faculty appointments at multiple universities including the  University of California, Los Angeles; University of Tennessee at Knoxville; California State University, Northridge; National Chiao-Tung University in Xinzhu and the Chinese Culture University in Taipei.
