Course Description

Recently, the professional industrial hygiene organizations have joined forces to update the “Code of Ethics” by creating a new set of “Member Ethical Principles”. Likewise, the ABIH has included an ethics rubric on the certification exams and has created a new enforceable “Code of Ethics.”

Are you prepared to properly address ethics issues? Do you know what the liabilities are for not properly addressing eEthics? Technical competency has been a common focal point of our profession. However, in this litigious society it is increasingly important to understand the ethical issues that could lead to legal liabilities.  As the lines between professional responsibilities and competencies become blurred in the workplace, it is critical that industrial hygienists do not put themselves, their clients, employees and the public at risk by practicing beyond their areas of competency. In addition, understanding and taking action to comply in good faith with the Code of Ethics will maintain the CIH as a hallmark for those practicing in the EHS field.

Agenda:

  • Introduction: Professional Challenges in Ethical Behavior G.Barbi
  • A Review of Professional Codes J. Throckmorton
  • ABIH Perspectives L. O'Donnell
  • Ethics Implementation Within the Workplace A.Leibowitz
  • Case Studies in Ethical Dilemmas D. Roskelley

Learning Outcomes

  • Gain an appreciation of the relevance and critical nature of ethical behavior in today’s world.
  • Identify ethical dilemmas and why they are difficult.
  • Analyze scenarios to understand ethical challenges and use tools and methodologies to make ethical choices.
