Industrial Hygienist Position with FedEx Ground, Moon Township, PA


Provides field Safety personnel with in-depth, comprehensive advice and interpretation of federal, state and local agency regulations affecting workplace safety, especially those involving environmental and hygiene factors. Conducts on-site evaluations, observing work practices and environmental conditions for potential safety and health hazards. Provides safety analysis, coverage, and response to internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Functions

Assesses workplace for environmental health hazards by observing work conditions, assessing records, conducting interviews, sampling, and monitoring chemical or physical agents.

Determines appropriate monitoring and sampling strategies.

bullet

Procures, maintains, operates, and calibrates a variety of sampling and monitoring equipment.

bullet

Evaluates and interprets monitoring and sampling results, makes determinations, and develops corrective strategies.

bullet

Prepares accurate and complete technical reports of survey findings, and provides recommendations on how to correct present or potential threats.

bullet

Provides expert-level knowledge regarding deliverables to improve safety performance. Uses subject matter expertise to develop targeted solutions that positively impact safety results.

bullet

Remains current on regulatory and industry trends and incorporate that knowledge into requirements and recommendations.

bullet

Establishes and maintains cross-functional relationships in support of safety initiatives.

 

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Public Health, or related fields required. Master’s degree preferred.

Minimum Experience

Seven (7) years previous experience required in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Atmospheric or Environmental testing.

Job Purpose:


The purpose of this position is to provide non-dietary exposure and risk assessment expertise in support of product safety for Bayer CropScience NA. Position responsibilities include the collection, evaluation, and dissemination of product-related non-dietary exposure and risk information, and the application of multi-route, multi-source aggregate and cumulative residential exposure and risk assessment models. The individual in this position will work under the guidance of senior non-dietary exposure and risk assessment experts within the Human Safety department to develop occupational and residential product safety assessments required by North American regulatory authorities for product registration and defense.


Success in this position requires the understanding and application of human exposure and risk assessment principles to the conduct of non-dietary safety assessments associated with agricultural and residential pesticide use. This position is an integral part of a cross-functional human safety assessment team and requires close integration and alignment with experts in non-dietary and dietary exposure, mammalian toxicology, risk assessment and regulatory safety.


Working Relationships:
 

This position is part of a cross-functional team of scientists (toxicologists, non-dietary and dietary exposure experts, and risk assessors) responsible for developing comprehensive
human safety profiles and dossiers required for NA and global registration of Bayer CropScience (BCS) products. As such, this position interfaces with a large number of people
both inside and outside of the company, requiring extensive development and maintenance of good functional working relationships. Throughout Bayer CropScience, contacts range from vice-presidents to scientific specialists and from Research and Marketing to Production in order to establish priorities and outline courses of action regarding regulatory requirements, customer requests and public health issues. Outside contacts include industry trade group representatives addressing scientific issues and industry projects regarding exposure and risk analysis; scientists, engineers, and scientific managers in EPA, PMRA, CDPR and state regulatory agencies addressing regulatory requirements and interpretations of exposure and risk analysis; customer representatives; university scientists involved with Bayer projects; and various scientific, research and development, and legal personnel dealing with exposure and risk assessment.


Major Tasks & Responsibilities:

Coordinate the collection, evaluation, and dissemination of product-related non-dietary exposure and risk information in support of BCS business operations ensuring continued product registrations, employee and customer protection, and compliance with United States and Canadian government regulations.

bullet

Populate and run deterministic and probabilistic non-dietary exposure and risk assessment models to produce comprehensive aggregate and cumulative assessments for new and existing BCS products.

bullet

Provide strategic input into the planning, design and conduct of non-dietary exposure studies performed by internal and external partners to ensure high quality and cost effective studies that meet international scientific and regulatory standards.

bullet

Assess strengths and weaknesses of non-dietary product safety positions for BCS products and advise regulatory and business colleagues on potential issues and strategies for managing them to minimize negative impacts on product registrations, sales and profitability.

bullet

Establish and maintain a leadership role in professional and trade association activities involving pesticide exposure evaluation methodologies, strategies or regulations so that incumbent's expertise in exposure and risk assessment is recognized by scientific and regulatory personnel when dealing with BCS products/issues.

bullet

Be an active and contributing member of the cross-functional BCS Human Safety, NA team.

 


Your Qualifications

 

bullet

Ph.D. in Industrial Hygiene, Toxicology, Epidemiology or a related science and 0-3 years of experience in human safety assessment along with demonstrated
technical leadership skills is preferred. An M.S. in an appropriate scientific discipline with 3+ years of experience will also be considered.

bullet

Must possess excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to work within a team to accomplish projects that require the co-operation and efforts of several individuals.

bullet

Must be able to communicate technical information clearly and accurately in both oral and written form.

bullet

Strong computer skills and a demonstrated understanding of the use and application of exposure and risk assessment models is very desirable.

bullet

Other desirable qualifications include:
* Ability to apply broad expertise to problems outside of normal experience to arrive at innovative strategies and solutions
*Ability to plan, organize and manage a diverse workload to meet all work objectives within established deadlines.
* Understanding of potential exposures associated with agricultural, professional and consumer pesticide use.
* Knowledge of the EPA and PMRA regulatory processes as it relates to the evaluation of human exposure, hazard, and risk assessment.

Position Description:

The successful candidate will be able to perform in an environment of increasing safety and environmental expectation regarding regulatory compliance and ongoing cost reduction, creating divergent pressures on performance. In addition, the incumbent must perform activities in support of plant operations plans and projects, and is a training resource in the areas of safety and environmental.

Function:

In support of corporate strategy, he/she is responsible for the developing strategies that insure all current and future environmental compliance objectives are met. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for continuous improvement of the facility concerning safety and environmental compliance. Other responsibilities include leading the facility safety committee activities and projects, leading incident investigations and root cause analysis, the management and training of emergency response personnel within the facility, and regulatory reporting as necessary.

Mandatory Qualifications:

BS in Environmental Science, Safety Management or related discipline with 3-5 years experience (demonstrated ability to assume increasing responsibility) or equivalent combination of education and experience. Proficiency in application of environmental analysis, working knowledge of industry safety and environmental system standards, and knowledge of safety and environmental legislation with application to an industrial environment. Ability to effectively communicate safety and environmental concepts, plans and technical data to all levels of the organization. Proficiency in the use of computers. Good human relations skills.

Non-Mandatory Qualifications:

Appropriate Safety and/or Environmental certifications. Plant safety and/or environmental experience. Experience in Lean Manufacturing concepts/implementation. An advanced Degree in Safety, Environmental Science or related Engineering.
