McClellan Nuclear Radiation Center Tour

The River City Student Section of the ASSE cordially invites members of the Sacramento Chapter of the ASSE and the Sacramento Valley Section of the AIHA on a tour of the McClellan Nuclear Radiation Center on Monday, June 22, 1998.

The Center is a 21st century research facility using advanced nuclear techniques in such areas as non-destructive testing using neutron radiography, production of "doped" silicon and planned treatment of inoperable tumors. There is no other facility in the world with its capabilities.

If you wish to attend this tour, please contact George Anastas, Advisor to the River City Section by e-mail (anastas@csus.edu) or fax (916/278-5447). George will need name, company affiliation, citizenship and social security number no later than 11:59 a.m., Monday, June 15, 1998. George will then provide the information to Base Security; Persons not on the "master" list will not be able to enter the facility.

The arrangements are to meet outside McClellan at 5:30 p.m., pass through Security at 5:45 p.m. and begin the tour at 6:00 p.m. George will provide details to the tour participants. The tour should last about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. No cameras are allowed and please wear comfortable footwear. Students of the River City Section will assist with the tour and we ask for a $1.00 per person donation to the River City Section.

AIHA Foundation Scholarship

At our last mini-symposium, Monty Herr asked our section to make a contribution to the AIHA Foundation Scholarship Fund.

The Scholarship Fund is a perpetual fund (self-supporting due to interest), where our one-time contribution would make a lasting effect. In addition, since the Scholarship Fund is managed by AIHA, it requires no additional effort on our part. To ensure that some of this money stays in Califomia,, local section members should take responsibility for promoting the ftind and encourag-ing eligible students to apply. The scholarship is available to students in approved Industrial Hygiene programs.

The board is recommending a $1,000 contribution to this worthy cause. Please fax back the enclosed ballot by June 8. Ballots from paid members will be tallied and a majority vote will rule.

Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation

Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) program of the California Department of Health Services (CDH) in association with the Public Health Institute (PHI) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has a series of 58 fatal accident reports. FACE identifies conditions that increase the probability of a work related fatality. For a list of FACE reports, please fax your name and address to (510) 540-2064. The public phone number of FACE is (510) 540-2336.

National News

Welcome back from Atlanta!

Co-extensive Membership

AIHA National announced earlier this vear that a resolution was adopted that will combine local section and national AIHA membership within the next five years.

This is a highly debated issue. Some believe that local sections should still be able to have affiliate and student members. But all full memberships would also require National membership.

Your comments on this topic can be made to your local board.

California Update

Please welcome the River City Student Section of ASSE as our new members.
