2009 New England Local Section Election

These individuals will be joining the existing Executive Committee in January 2009. They will do an outstanding job for our organization in the coming months and years to further NEAIHA’s missions of 1.) bringing together persons interested in the various aspects of industrial hygiene, occupational and environmental health and safety for idea exchange and networking, 2.) helping to increase the knowledge of industrial hygiene through interchange and dissemination of information, and 3.) promoting the study and control of environmental factors affecting the health and well-being of workers and the public. Please join me in welcoming our newly elected NEAIHA Executive Committee officers at a formal announcement/installation during the December 4, 2008 NEAIHA/SKC seminar (www.neaiha.org)
Dear NEAIHA Members,
As the Past-President, it is my honor and duty to present to you the candidates to replace Executive Committee members for 2009. We are truly fortunate in this chapter for all of the volunteers who contributed to the chapter’s great success these past few years. I personally would like to thank each and every one of them for their support during my tenure as an officer of the NEAIHA.
The NEAIHA Executive Committee (EC) has the following openings that are to be filled for the business year starting January 1, 2009 and running through December 31, 2009.
President-Elect The main responsibility of the individual in this position is to plan and coordinate the chapter’s technical meetings; including arranging speakers and applying to the ABIH for certification maintenance points. The President-Elect also serves as the NEAIHA contact to AIHA regarding the content of the website(www.neaiha.org). This officer also acts on behalf of the President in his/her absence. This position automatically succeeds to the position of President after one year and then to Past-President. A three year commitment is required.
Candidate for President-Elect(1 position)
Paul J. Webb, CIH, CSP
Paul has been a NEAIHA section member since relocating to Massachusetts in 2002. He is currently a manager of Industrial Hygiene Services at National Grid, an electric and gas utility located in Westborough, MA. Paul received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Masters in Industrial Hygiene degrees from the University of South Carolina. He also holds an MBA from Babson College. Paul is certified in industrial hygiene and safety.
Paul has practiced IH for 20 years, and his experience includes work with OSHA, the pharmaceutical industry, consulting, and occupational epidemiology for the State of North Carolina and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Prior to moving to Massachusetts, Paul was an active member of the Carolinas Section of the AIHA. He has served as a local section Director as well as President of the North Carolina Industrial Hygiene Council, a local section-sponsored lobbying group that successfully worked with the NC state legislature to pass title protection for industrial hygienists.
Secretary This office has a term of two years. The officer is responsible for all correspondence of the chapter; taking and distributing minutes of EC meetings; maintaining the membership database; distribution of meeting announcements; dues notices; and other member communications; and assists with registration and check-in at meetings.
Candidate for Secretary (1 position)
Robert A. Weker
Robert has a Bachelor degree in Chemistry from Northeastern and a Masters in Industrial Hygiene degree from Harvard. He has a company, ALBEN Consulting, and since 2005 has been on staff with the MIT Department of Environment, Health and Safety with assigned duties and responsibilities in Industrial Hygiene, General Safety, Biosafety, and Environmental Management. His interest is to gain ultimately the necessary experience and knowledge in the necessary precursors that can be applied to help build and sustain the newly-developing field of occupational health and safety of the aging workforce.
Prior to MIT, he was affiliated for 30+ years with Harvard School of Public Health(student, staff, and lab manager) and during the 1980’s mostly with the Harvard University Industrial Hygiene group(IH chemist). He co-directed the 5 day HSPH Continuing Education Course, Industrial Hygiene Chemistry, in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Since 1988, he has been a laboratory assessor for the Bulk Asbestos Program of the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program(NVLAP) within the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He has served as a volunteer Board Advisor to the EC during 2007 and 2008.
Director There are a total of three (3) Directors on the EC; each serves a three-year term. The terms of office are established such that one Director is replaced each year, thus assuring that there is always some level of experience among the Directors of the EC. The role of each Director is to assist the EC officers with developing and implementing the programs and activities of the association.
Candidates for Director( 1 position)
Kimberly M. Castillon, CIH
Kimberly has been a safety and health professional for 17 years, both in private industry and for the past 12 years with the federal government. Presently she is the Assistant Area Director for an OSHA Enforcement Office and serves as a team leader on the national task group within OSHA assigned to the assessment and development of resources for the “Improvement in the quality of Industrial Hygiene services”. Kimberly graduated with a Bachelors degree in Biology from Missouri Southern State University. Kimberly is Board certified in Industrial Hygiene and has served for three years as an elected Councilor with the Academy of Industrial Hygiene.
Kimberly has been involved in the promotion and recruitment of professional certification for government employees. She has actively participated at a regional and national level with OSHA on task teams to improve the quality of industrial hygiene services to compliance officers. She has provided input for the National Safety and Health Information Bulletin on the hazards associated with the microwave popcorn industry and participated in two presentations at AIHce.
Paul H. Matuszko, CIH
Paul has worked as an environmental health and safety professional for over 22 years concentrating in indoor air quality, building science, remediation project management and OSHA program compliance services. For the last five years he has been at Boston College and have managed a broad range of EH&S programs including OSHA and EPA compliance, training, written program development, construction safety and industrial hygiene inspections and remediation projects. In addition to being a Certified Industrial Hygienist, he is an OSHA General Industry Outreach trainer, Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant(CIEC) and Occupational Health & Safety Technologist(OHST) and have served in both internal and external EH&S consultant roles throughout my career.
This past year, he assisted the NEAIHA Executive Committee as a Board Advisor. He have attended Executive Committee meetings, assisted in planning section meetings and acted as an outreach liaison to other professional EH&S groups. As Director, he would like to continue working toward increasing section meeting and membership participation by
Amie Patel
Amie is currently a compliance officer with OSHA. Her responsibilities include conducting safety and health inspections in a variety of workplaces from hospitals to shipyards. She earned a Masters of Public Health in Environmental and Occupational Health from Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Immediately after graduate school, she became an Industrial Hygiene Fellow at NIOSH under the Health Hazard Evaluation program in their Atlanta Field Office.
Throughout her career, she has always been an active and participating member of local AIHA sections. As a graduate student, she was a member of the Georgia Local Section, and has been a member of NEAIHA since moving to Massachusetts in 2004. She has enjoyed and valued being a member for 4 years. Now, she would like to volunteer my time to further develop and grow the NEAIHA. As Director, she wants to get more students and young industrial hygienists involved with NEAIHA. She appreciates the encouragement her mentors provided me to attend meetings and interact with other industrial hygiene professionals while she was a graduate student. She wants to provide the same mentorship and encouragement to those just starting out their industrial hygiene careers.
Vendor Liaison This is a newly created position with a term of one year. This officer is the primary contact between NEAIHA and the various vendors which provide services, equipment, and supplies to the EH&S community in the region. His/Her role is to maintain current vendor information, handle communication with vendors regarding NEAIHA and meeting sponsorships, and coordinates the vendor exhibit at the annual all-day meeting.
Candidate for Vendor Liaison (1 position)
Andre Weker
Andre is a Business Development Manager for MARCOR Remediation, Inc., one of the nation’s oldest and largest privately held environmental contracting firms. He has over 10 years experience in the environmental field, including work on residential and commercial projects. He develops client relationships and implements effective business plans and marketing strategies for local markets. He has worked with the International Business Code Council(IBC), Construction Specifications Institute(CSI), American Conference of Industrial Hygienists(ACGIH), and is an affiliate with the American Industrial Hygiene Association(AIHA) and Indoor Air Quality Association(IAQA). He has experience speaking on lead-based paint, asbestos, mold awareness, PCB abatement and industrial solutions.
