2010 Executive Committee Elections

November 2, 2009

Dear NEAIHA Members,

As the Past-President, it is my honor and duty to present to you the candidates for President-Elect, Treasurer, Director, and Vendor Liaison for the 2010 NEAIHA Executive Committee (EC).  As in past years, we have an experienced and talented group of EHS professionals who are willing to donate their time and energy to ensure that our organization continues to grow as a valued resource for our members.  The candidate statements are shown below.

Roles and responsibilities of EC members are detailed on page 3 of the NEAIHA Bylaws (see the NEAIHA website or click here).  Voting (by active/dues paid members only) will be by electronic ballot and run from November 2 to November 16, 2009. Starting November 2, 2009 the electronic voting form may be accessed via Memberclicks and a direct link will also be posted on the website next week. Questions on using the form may be addressed to Andrew Kalil (akalil@mit.edu). Election results will be announced and outgoing EC members recognized at the December 10, 2009 meeting.

As with past elections, please note that write-in candidates can be entered on ballots and will be considered by the EC for any of the positions.

Lastly, I have enjoyed supporting the organization for the past few years and encourage each of you to please exercise your right to vote.

Best Regards,

Candidate for President-Elect

Mark Malchik, CIH, CSP

I have been a member of the NEAIHA as far back as I can remember (1985?) and have regularly attended evening programs, annual all-day sessions, and other events.  I am currently an IH/Safety Consultant as well as the internal EHS Director for GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. in Norwood and have previously worked for Mass. Div. of Occupational Hygiene as an Asbestos Inspector and Right-to-Know Supervisor. I have also worked as a research assistant for a couple of years in biochemistry laboratories.  I received my Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies and my Master of Science in Public Health from the UMass -  Amherst, and between degrees I worked as a biochemistry research assistant for a couple of years.  I have benefited greatly from my membership in the NEAIHA over the past many years, and am eager to do my part and “give back” to the organization through the investment of my time and effort.  My focus will be on what I believe to be the core mission of the organization, and that is to provide its membership with high quality and constructive meetings, seminars and training opportunities.  I also look forward to ways that I may participate in promoting our profession in both the public and private sectors, and assist in coordinating our local chapter activities with the national AIHA. But my strengths, interests, and my greatest enthusiasm, will be focused on the regular events and activities that we all look forward to in order to meet with others in our field, share our thoughts, have a few laughs, stay abreast of issues we confront in the field, and most important, to receive information conveyed to us by the speakers that will benefit us professionally.   The greatest benefit I personally have experienced from attending NEAIHA events over the recent years has been the direct result of the selection of pertinent topics and quality speakers.   The reason for “throwing my hat into the ring” for the position of President Elect, is to actively participate in the process of continuing the high standard of quality that has been set for our meetings and seminars.  I look forward to working with other members of the organization, with the hope of ensuring a continuation of interesting, pertinent, technically sound (and entertaining) professional development opportunities for us all.

Candidate for Treasurer

Shannon Lozeau

I’ve been a member of AIHA and ASSE, both at the national and local level, and am interested in assisting NEAIHA and the Executive Committee in its ongoing growth efforts.  Along with being an NEAIHA member for several years, I have also been an active member (currently Vice President) of the New England Semiconductor Environmental Health and Safety Association.  As an elected member of the board I will focus my efforts on working with the EC and external resources to further develop the financial management accounting infrastructure.

As far as money management experience, I manage the financial side of my family’s business, including book keeping, accounting, permit registrations, customer management, account reconciliations, and tax preparation. I have experience with accounting software, such as Quick Books, and generally enjoy all aspects of accounting and fiscal monitoring.

I am currently employed as an industrial hygiene and safety consultant with ENVIRON International Corporation in Groton, Massachusetts and have previously held industrial hygiene or safety and health positions in academic institutions and manufacturing facilities in New England.

I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Radiation Health Physics and a Master's Degree in industrial hygiene, both from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.

I look forward to becoming an elected member of the NEAIHA and hope to provide great service for the years to come.

Candidate for Director

Alexis Sablock

I am a dedicated member of the New England AIHA and of the industrial hygiene profession.  As an elected member of the board I will focus my efforts on outreach and increasing our membership, with a particular emphasis on attracting students.  I am currently employed as an industrial hygienist for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.  I have previously held industrial hygiene or safety and health positions in academic institutions and consulting firms.  I have been an NEAIHA member for several years, and I have already been serving as a volunteer to the NEAIHA executive committee for the past year.  During this time I have performed a variety of tasks from preparing handouts to attracting speakers.  I earned a Master's Degree in industrial hygiene from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell in 2001 and the CIH in 2007.  In my spare time I also volunteer as the radiation safety officer for the town of Stratham in New Hampshire, which is part of the emergency planning zone for Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant.  I look forward to continuing my service to the membership for years to come."

Candidate for Vendor Liaison

Greg Hatch

I have been a member of NEAIHA, a participant in the vendor/consultant webpage system, and been an exhibitor for many years now and have the desire to contribute to the local section's ongoing development and growth. I am currently the Regional Manager of Industrial Hygiene with Hillmann Environmental Group in Wellesley, MA and previously worked for Clayton Environmental and other local consulting firms. I received my BS in Engineering from Southeastern Massachusetts University in 1987.  Over the past few years, I have noticed a marked improvement in the NEAIHA local section past few years and would like the opportunity to continue expand and develop the relationship between the vendors/consultants, the Executive committee and membership. I have been in the IH consulting field in New England for many years, I’m familiar with a lot of the vendors that are currently active within the community, and look forward to maintaining existing and developing new relationships.
