WANTED: Old Copies of ACGIH Industrial Ventilation Manual

During July 2008 the Harvard School of Public Health will conduct a continuing education course for engineers and architects from poor countries worldwide on methods designed to prevent transmission of airborne infections in health care facilities. Tuberculosis and pandemic flu are high on the list. Attendees, about 35, are largely subsidized by the GATES Foundation, WHO, NIH, and USAID funds donated for this purpose. Ventilation, both natural and mechanical, is an important intervention and will be a major part of the curriculum. A request to ACGIH to empty their warehouse of outdated copies of their Industrial Ventilation Manual by donating them to these poor country professionals was unsuccessful.

So now I am appealing to members of NEAIHA to search your shelves and send me your old copies of the Industrial Ventilation Manual so I can give each one of these people a reference copy to take home. The age of the Manual is irrelevant as the important information for them has been in all editions. Please mail or send copies by UPS to

Prof. Melvin First
Harvard School of Public Health
665 Huntington Ave.
Boston MA 02115

Or drop them off at the front desk. I will be glad to repay shipping cost.

This is a very worthy cause and I thank you.

NEAIHA and others Celebrate North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Day at the Massachusetts State House

On May 6, 2008, the Greater Boston Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (GBC-ASSE) gathered representatives from NEAIHA, other local OH&S organizations, and the state and federal government to observe North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week at the Massachusetts State House. Booths from the various organizations were erected in the Grand Staircase area of the Massachusetts State House to inform the general public about the various organizations and our ongoing efforts to promote Occupational Health and Safety in the workplace.

The Massachusetts State Senate and House of Representatives passed a resolution recognizing ASSE and NAOSH week that was presented to Joe Fulliero, VP of Government affairs for the Greater Boston Chapter, by Congresswoman Christine E. Canavan. In addition, a State Gubernatorial Proclamation signed by Governor Deval Patrick proclaiming the week as Massachusetts Occupational Safety and Health Week was presented to Remi Fleuette, President of Boston Chapter, by the Massachusetts Secretary of Labor, Ms. Suzanne Bump,.

NEAIHA would again like to thank the ASSE Greater Boston Chapter, Senator Bryan Joyce and his office for their help and continued support in facilitating the MA/NAOSH event and coordinating the endorsement of the resolutions.

NEAIHA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ELECTION ---LOOKING FOR CANDIDATES!

In my seven years of service to this chapter, our members and others have listened to many interesting speakers regarding health and safety.  These topics have ranged from the very small---nanotechnology---to the VERY BIG---NASA IN OUTER SPACE.  I’ve learned much from the highly skilled and diverse professionals in our chapter.  I have also seen the benefits of working with other local chapters and professional organizations.  The first joint Industrial Hygiene meeting in Sturbridge, MA in November 2007 proved to be an excellent blending of talents and resources to learn about our profession.  NEAIHA also won best large chapter website this past year.

As we have mentioned at past meetings, due to the recent change in our “business year”, the existing NEAIHA Executive Committee will remain in place for 2008.  As the past president for the NEAIHA, it is my pleasure and responsibility to seek out candidates for the upcoming new officer positions effective in 2009.  We have a need for candidates to fill the positions of President-elect, Secretary, Director, and Vendor Liaison.  Each position comes with varying responsibilities, but they all offer you an opportunity to grow as a professional, network with colleagues, and learn new skill sets.  Please feel free to talk with me or any of the Executive Committee members to help you understand the commitments and select the position that best fits your capabilities.

You will get back more than you can imagine and will help NEAIHA to continue to move forward.  We will be accepting nominations starting with our January 23, 2008 meeting through September 30, 2008.

We encourage you to consider contributing your knowledge, skills, and talents as an NEAIHA officer.

Best Regards,

Don Delikat, CIH

Past-President
