The Department of Environmental Safety at the University of Maryland, College Park, has an immediate opening for a full-time Environmental Health and Safety Specialist. This position will assist in the Department's Environmental Affairs and Occupational Safety & Health units by performing multi-disciplinary duties, including but not limited

to: collecting, transporting, packaging of waste; maintaining records relating to the hazardous, radioactive, and special medical waste programs; surveying laboratories for hazards & emergency contact information; preparing and posting laboratory warning signs; and testing of fume hoods and other exhaust devices. The selected candidate will support the implementation of environmental and safety programs by performing routine inspection audits; maintaining the associated data management system; implementing environmental and safety programs; and participating periodically in the 24-hour "on-call" emergency response program. A high school diploma or GED with a stable work history is required; two -- four years experience performing related work is desirable. Must be able to pass a medical exam for working with hazardous materials and wearing personal protective equipment, including a full-face respirator. This is an exempt position with excellent leave, medical coverage, retirement, and tuition remission benefits.

Responsibilities for this position are to provide knowledge and expertise in the operation and support of the Environment and Safety Program to ensure compliance with local state and federal regulations and appropriate consensus standards.  Conducts site inspections and assists the Safety Manager in procedure and policy development to ensure laboratories and facilities are in compliance. Coordinates and performs environmental monitoring, assesses evaluates and controls hazardous conditions, manages MSDS files. Assists with the coordination hazardous chemical and medical waste program and maintains appropriate documentation.  Assists Safety Manager with permits and licenses and maintains relevant certifications or training to perform duties.  Develops and presents training programs, assists with the IBC and site safety committee, maintains safety equipment and PPE. Responds to emergences, and may coordinate emergency response for chemical/ biological/ radioactive/ fire or other crises situations.  Assists the Safety Manager with the Occupational Health Program and completes other projects as needed.  Must have knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding the safety issues associated with the project. Incumbent must be a motivated self starter with excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills and have the ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects.

Minimum Education/Training:  Bachelor's degree in basic or applied science or related field. Associates in Science (6 years progressively responsible biological laboratory safety experience)

Minimum Experience:  2-4 years experience in a research laboratory, radiation safety, chemistry or biological safety

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration:  Prefer HazMat Technician 24 hour training

B. Fire Protection/Safety Engineers and Safety Technician

Earth Resources Technology, Inc. (ERT) has three full-time positions open for two Safety Engineers and one Safety Technician to provide on-site technical support at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland:

 1)  The Fire Protection/Safety Engineer will be responsible for the review of new construction and building modification project designs and drawings, concentrating on National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and International Building Code (IBC) compliance.  Candidate must have a strong fire protection background and be able to read blueprints.  This position will also assist in building inspections and occupational safety program reviews.  The candidate will assist in developing and presenting safety training.  Requires B.S. in fire protection engineering, safety engineering or other engineering discipline from an accredited program or a technical discipline with minimum of 2 years experience.

 2) The Safety Technician will inspect laboratories for compliance with 29 CFR 1910.1450 and the Chemical Hygiene Plan and provide safety support for laboratory personnel.  Candidate should have a strong background in General Industry OSHA regulations, hazard evaluation, laboratory procedures and a basic knowledge of chemistry.  This position will also assist in the inspection of buildings and occupational safety program reviews.  The candidate will assist in developing and presenting safety training.  Requires B.A./B.S. in safety, industrial hygiene, engineering or technical discipline with minimum of 2 years experience.

 3)  The other Safety Engineer will assist managers administer and coordinate occupational safety programs pertaining to controls, hazard evaluation, and regulatory compliance to facilitate operations.  Candidate should have background in occupational safety and be strong in OSHA General Industry and Construction regulations.  Candidate should have taken the OSHA 500 and 501 training courses, and should have experience in developing and presenting safety training.  Requires B.S. in fire protection engineering, safety engineering or other engineering discipline from an accredited program or a technical discipline with minimum of 2 years experience.
