In a Nov. 26 joint letter to Senator Tom Harkin, AIHA®, the National Safety Council, and the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) expressed support for continued stable funding for OSHA and NIOSH in fiscal years 2013–2014 and urged Senator Harkin to prevent the elimination of funding for NIOSH’s Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing sector program and Education and Research Centers. The letter also highlights several harmful policy riders in the House of Representatives’ Labor‐HHS‐Education appropriations bill for fiscal year 2013 that would prevent OSHA from promulgating a rule on injury and illness prevention programs, prevent enforcement of OSHA’s new residential construction fall protection directive, and terminate the Susan Harwood Training Grant Program. The letter asks that the senator work to stop those policy riders.
Senator Harkin is the chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies. Read the letter.
