Dear Friends,
Please let us know what are your impressions of Hurricane Ike and emergency response measures taken. Did we learn from our experiences in responding to Hurricane Katherine?

Think Globally, Act Locally
By Andrew Cutz, CIH, and Stephen Reynolds, PhD, CIH
Practicing industrial hygienists are encouraged to “think globally and act locally” when dealing with public health and emergency preparedness issues. It is important that we continue to hone our skills and expert knowledge when anticipating, recognizing, evaluating and controlling occupational health and safety issues in an emergency situation. In the same way, it is important that we communicate this expert knowledge and information to our communities at large. For example, we often fail to advise the public and media about the immediate hazards of small-engine-powered equipment when used during flood restoration and cleanup operations. Time and time again there are reports of preventable fatalities caused by carbon monoxide poisonings. And collectively we could cite many other examples and provide practical solutions for each. We need to communicate this expert knowledge and information to the public more effectively.
