USA Today Publishes Supplement on Workplace Health and Safety

The media marketing company Mediaplanet recently published a special supplement on workplace health and safety in USA Today. One of the articles in the supplement, “Keeping America’s Youngest Workforce Safe on the Job,” focuses on Safety Matters, the joint AIHA-NIOSH program that raises awareness among young people about workplace safety and health and provides an understanding of the skills they need to become active participants in creating safe and healthy work environments.

AIHA President Deborah Nelson told Mediaplanet, “As a country, we tend to focus on injuries and not think so much about overall health. When you get hurt at work, you know right away that you’re hurt. But when you have low-level exposures over a prolonged period of time, it can take years for these diseases to develop.”

Other articles in the supplement discuss Only the Brave, a movie about the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a group of firefighters who died battling the Yarnell Hill wildfire in 2013; a proposed ANSI standard intended to mitigate the hazards of falling objects; the ways that the construction industry is adapting to OSHA’s new silica rule; and safety issues on construction sites.
