This PDC will provide attendees with information to use to comply with the OSHA Silica Standard. This course will be presented as a scenario in which the attendees work for an organization that just acquired a company that produces crystalline silica-containing products. The attendees will learn the steps needed to identify, evaluate, and control crystalline silica exposure in their newly acquired company. The course will cover: industries with exposure to crystalline silica, silica polymorphs, acute and chronic health effects, components of 1910.1053, using descriptive statistics, objective data to estimate exposures, sampling for crystalline silica, lab analytical method issues, and exposure control plan development.

*Registration includes breakfast & boxed luncheon.

**Please note: power strips will not be provided at each attendee's seat; however, charging stations for laptops will be provided in each course room.


Participants should have an understanding of fundamental statistics, experience measuring employee exposure, and an understanding of qualitative risk assessment.

Each participant will receive information to evaluate respirable crystalline silica exposures, develop an exposure monitoring plan, and write a silica exposure control plan.​​


  • Describe conditions or products with quartz, cristobalite, and trydimite.
  • Explain acute and chronic health effects of silica exposure.
  • Use statistical methods to describe a job title or similar exposure group's silica exposure.
  • List eight categories of information required by OSHA in an exposure monitoring record.
  • Identify the actions needed to maintain, calibrate, and use a respirable dust cyclone.
  • Interpret the results of a lab analytical report for respirable crystalline silica.
  • Develop a periodic crystalline silica exposure monitoring plan.
  • Write a crystalline silica exposure control plan.

Rod Harvey is the Director, Client Services at Carnow Conibear & Associates, Ltd., and former Senior Director of Operations, Great Lakes Region for Bureau Veritas' Health, Safety and Environmental Services division. He received his BS in Biology from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin and his MS in Environmental Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Harvey has spent his entire professional career in environmental health and safety consulting and has over 30 years of experience.

A Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, and registered as a Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois, Harvey's experience includes providing EHS consulting services to a wide range of clients, both public and private. He is a member of the national and Chicago Local Section (Past President) of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), and the National and Illinois chapters of the American Society of Professional Engineers.​

Tim Stauder, MSPH, CIH
Principal Consultant, HSE, Bureau Veritas North America, Inc., Chicago Operations 

Tim Stauder is a Principal Consultant for the Chicago Operation of Bureau Veritas North America. His responsibilities include management of staff, proposals, projects, account coordination and quality.

Stauder has more than 25 years of comprehensive experience in the environmental, health, and safety profession, including: conducted audits throughout the world, developed audit protocols and supervised the work of international auditors conducting occupational health and medical surveillance audits; managed environmental, health and safety risks and programs for 10 years at Veterans Administration Medical Centers; data validation and analysis; regulatory reporting such as OSHA injury and illness, EPA Tier II and RCRA waste; risk evaluation and assessment; comprehensive industrial hygiene field work and management responsibility and identification and resolution of EHS risks in clinical and research laboratories.​​​
