This course, based on the AIHA Technical Framework: Guidance on Use of Direct Reading Instruments, asserts the importance of using Direct Reading Instruments (DRIs) frequently and correctly while educating DRI users on the foundational knowledge they need to improve their DRI proficiency.
Course Outline:
- Course Introduction
- Module 1: Hazard Evaluation
- Module 2: Chemistry for Monitoring
- Module 3: Hazardous Gas and Vapor Monitors
- Module 4: Functions & Limitations
- Module 5: Sensor Specificity
- Module 6: Calibration & Functional Tests
- Module 7: Reality Check on Results
- Module 8: Use Error & User Error
- Module 9: Maintenance & Storage of Your DRI
- Module 10: Record Keeping & Datalogging
- Conclusion
Course Outcomes:
Upon completion, students will have a basic understanding of:
- What a DRI is and where it is used
- How different types of DRIs function including Colorimetric (Detector) Tubes, Electrochemical Sensors, Oxygen Sensors, Combustible Gas Sensors, Photoionization Detectors (PIDs), and other specialized detectors
- What a hazard evaluation is and why it is important to complete one before using a DRI
- Chemical properties of gases and vapors and how that affects DRI measurements
- How to identify the functions and limitations of your DRI, including cross-sensitivities
- Calibration and functional tests
- How to troubleshoot unusual readings
- How to maintain a DRI
- How to keep appropriate records of your DRI including data logs
Why a Certificate Program?
A certificate program awards tangible proof that knowledge was achieved and/or skills mastered.
Who Will Benefit
This course will benefit any individuals who use DRIs to monitor work environments to protect worker health and safety. This may include firefighters, emergency workers, industrial workers, and entry-level OEHS professionals (such as IH Technicians).
Time to Complete
This course will take approximately 4 hours to complete. Participants will have 90 days to complete the education and take the assessment.
Web Course Materials
All course materials are provided as PDF downloads via the online classroom (registrant-access only). No hardcopy materials are mailed for this course.
Registrants connect and get unlimited 24/7 web access for 90 days from date of purchase. Materials in this course include:
- A full eLearning suite of 12 modules incorporating narrated slides and interactive activities
