Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are among the leading causes of lost work time and worker compensation claims in industry, and are associated with major economic costs. This webinar presents new insights into the causes of MSDs, and suggests ​improved methods of reducing the risk of MSDs in the workplace.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • ​Evaluate the costs and disability associated with work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) 

  • D​escribe evidence that MSDs are the result of a fatigue failure process

  • ​Differentiate between traditional ergonomics risk assessment approaches and those suggested by fatigue failure theory.

  • ​Discuss how knowledge of fatigue failure theory can be used to prevent MSDs in the workplace.

Presenter: Sean Gallagher, PhD

From 1984-2011, Dr. Gallagher performed research to reduce musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) with the United States Bureau of Mines and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). In January of 2012, Dr. Gallagher accepted a faculty position in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department at Auburn University. Dr. Gallagher was awarded the 2013 International Ergonomics Association/Liberty Mutual Medal in Occupational Safety and Ergonomics for his paper demonstrating that musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the result of a fatigue failure process. Dr. Gallagher received his PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Ohio State University in 2003.
