How to Assess and Manage Nanomaterial Risks

This online self-study course is intended for IH's who are responsible for the health and safety of workers exposed to nanomaterials.  Adapted from a popular PDC, it contains 3.5 hours of instructional video and related activities.

This course will provide a disciplined process for the responsible management of nanomaterials, which includes: 

  • ​anticipating where nanomaterials may be in the workplace,
  • recognizing the potential for occupational exposures, 
  • evaluation of the exposures using a variety of sampling equipment,
  • control based on prevention through design and control banding tools, and 
  • confirmation and continual reevaluation of the risk management plan. 
Participants will be guided through an example of creating a sampling plan, evaluating data, and control recommendation. Using nanomaterial exposure scenarios, participants will create a sampling plan, analyze provided data, and decide if engineering controls should be added to the risk management plan. Participants will be provided information to understand how to apply hazard and control banding for a nanomaterial.

Course Presenters
Laura Hodson is the Coordinator of NIOSH’s nanotechnology research center. She is certified in the practice of industrial hygiene and has a BS in Chemistry and Environmental Studies, and a MSPH in Industrial Hygiene. Laura has over 30 years of chemistry and industrial hygiene experience including the evaluation of nanomaterial facilities, and is the document manager of several NIOSH nanotechnology guidance documents including Approaches to Safe Nanotechnology.


Adrienne Eastlake, MS, REHS is a Lieutenant with the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. Lt. Eastlake provides outreach to the nanomaterial health and safety community through document development, publications, exhibits, presentations and delivery of professional development courses. She has conducted site visits to nanomaterial producing facilities to gain a better understanding of the processes, tasks, possible exposures, and controls that are being used.  


Learning Level​


Competent- can perform to basic standards; has a thorough understanding of the content area but limited practical/work experience in the application of the content/concepts.


Participants should have a basic understanding of what constitutes an engineered nanomaterial, industrial hygiene sampling techniques, and the hierarchy of controls.

  • Assess a workplace for nanomaterials and determine what types of industrial hygiene samples should be collected.
  • Develop a sampling plan.

  • Determine if controls are adequate and if not apply the hierarchy of controls.

  • Apply a control banding tool to a nanomaterial.
