10:30 a.m.-11:45 a.m. - Yeast Flatulence or Eructation (CO2): What are the effects and how to control It and Other IH Concerns in Breweries
Dave Huizen, Ph.D., CIH - Occupational Health and Safety Associate Professor, GVSU
Brewing/Fermentation operations use yeast to convert sugars to CO2 and ethanol. An industrial hygiene concern in breweries is exposure to CO2. Low levels of CO2 exposure can cause cognitive effects and increased fatigue due to physical demands combined with CO2 exposure. Additional IH concerns are associated with cleaning and sanitizing chemicals and grain dust exposures.

12:30 a.m.-2:00 m. -Marijuana Impairment at Work
William J. Judge JD, LL.M., Drug Screening Compliance Institute
We will provide an overview of where things stand today - 38 states allow the medical use of marijuana, and 24 states permit adult use. State laws differ significantly. Healthcare professionals and their employer clients must avoid the pitfalls of the states where they operate. Some states prohibit employer discrimination for an employee's off-duty use of cannabis products, while other states limit employer action to an employee's use or being under the influence "at work." What does Michigan law provide? How should you address these issues? Let's talk about it.
