Events: Looking at Safety from an Insurer's Perspective

Event Title

Looking at Safety from an Insurer's Perspective

PRESENTER:    Ralph E. Thresher, Sr. Loss Control Consultant, Webber and Grinnell Insurance

Ralph has over 35 years in the insurance industry, most of it in risk management and worker’s compensation. Ralph has visited thousands of workplaces to determine their risk levels and related insurability.

Looking at Safety from an Insurer’s Perspective

Ralph will discuss insurance risk parameters and tools such as experience modification rate to assess businesses. Some questions asked when touring a facility are: What have they done in the past? Are there important details to their previous exposures and claims? What is the account’s loss history? What is the account’s attitude toward improving their experience mod and compliance, reducing claims, and their actions to adjust their operations so they are less likely to have any type of claims?

Although compliance is a very important component of evaluating an account for insurability, there is significantly more to the evaluation than just compliance to OSHA regulations. We, as insurance loss control professionals, make an educated guess based on the survey of the account, information acquired, their loss history and their attitude toward recommended compliance to determine if this account might be a profitable risk and provide this information to an underwriter in an understandable manner. We are the eyes and the ears of insurance carrier underwriters and use these tools to assess the chance of potentially costly claims.
