Regulatory Requirements, Interpretations and Consensus Standards

American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has developed multiple laser safety-related standards many of which are applicable to the laboratory environment.  Note that the Laser Institute of America is the secretariat for the Z136 series of standards, and per ANSI guidelines the LIA updates those standards based on the work of standard subcommittee volunteers.

  • ANSI Z87.1-2010: Practice for Occupational and Educational Eye and Face Protection.

  • ANSI Z136.1-2007: American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers.

  • ANSI Z136.2: American National Standard for the Safe Use of Optical Fiber Communication Systems Utilizing Laser Diode and LED Sources – includes free space communication (possible republication in 2013)

  • ANSI Z136.3-2011: American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care Facilities

  • ANSI Z136.4-2010: American National Standard for the Recommended Practice for Laser Safety Measurements for Hazard Evaluation

  • ANSI Z136.5-2009: American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers in Educational Institutions

  • ANSI Z136.6-2005: American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers Outdoors

  • ANSI Z136.7-2008: American National Standard for Testing & Labeling of Laser Protective Equipment

  • ANSI Z136.8-2012: American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers in Research, Development and Testing

  • The SPIE (Society of Photo-Optica Instrumentation Engineers) Press recently (2013) published a book entitled Laser Safety in the Lab.  The book’s author Ken Barat recently retired from his position as Laser Safety Officer at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.  This book is an excellent resource for the LSO charged with facilitating laser safety in a research laboratory environment.
