Purpose & Objectives

AIHA is seeking volunteers to develop a white paper on the implementation of the Hierarchy of Controls. The goal of this paper is to bring additional value to the AIHA community by going beyond the basics of implementation of the Hierarchy of Controls. This paper will include a discussion of the entire framework of Hierarchy of Controls, which can be used to help AIHA create future position statements on product bans, legislation, and regulations. It will also include a comprehensive discussion of how OEHS professionals may consider and select elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE) as recommended layers of hazard control. As an added value, this paper will provide a focus for OEHS professionals on the need for control planning in OEHS programs. Finally, this paper will address the need to continuously improve controls toward higher levels of the hierarchy and showcase how to do so.

The Hierarchy of Controls white paper will allow AIHA to take this key approach for industrial hygienists and consistently apply it to many different OEHS issues facing the public and workers today.
