AIHA Member Testifies in Support of Illinois Legislation on Protecting First Responders and Others from Fentanyl Exposure

March 12, 2018

“The broader opioid epidemic afflicting our Nation is also placing at risk the workers we all depend upon for our own safety and security,” said AIHA member Sampa Das Ostrem, MS, CIH, when she testified at a March 1 hearing of the Illinois State House Fire & Emergency Services Committee on HR 809. This resolution – one of the first of its kind in the nation – urges all first responders, law enforcement and public health officials to be educated about the dangers of exposure to opioids, such as fentanyl, and to take precautions to avoid potential overdoses.

“HR 809 is an important next step in protecting first responders from the dangers of the opioid epidemic. AIHA hopes that by highlighting this critical, but underreported issue, new, meaningful action will be taken. … AIHA hopes that this Committee and the entire General Assembly approves this resolution, and that other States are inspired to introduce their own, similar legislation,” said Ms. Ostrem.

The resolution was adopted on March 8, 2018. The status of the legislation can be found here.
