NIEHS to Present Webinar on Portable Air Cleaners

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Worker Training Program will present a webinar titled “Practical Considerations for Using Portable Air Cleaners to Prevent Transmission of Infectious Aerosols” on Aug. 16 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. ET. The webinar will address the assessment of ventilation systems within a building or space, the selection and use of portable air cleaners, and recommendations from ASHRAE.

Recent publications from CDC and NIEHS indicate that portable air cleaners can be effective in reducing aerosol exposures in buildings as supplements to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system ventilation and filtration. An article in CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report discusses a study that showed a 65 percent reduction in exposure to simulated exhaled aerosol particles through use of two high-energy particulate-absorbing (HEPA) air cleaners in a 584-square-foot room with an HVAC system that provided 2 air changes per hour. Practical suggestions for selecting and using portable air cleaners appear in an NIEHS fact sheet (PDF) that the agency published in June.
