CALL TO ACTION
This framework provides an organized summary of the collective knowledge and skills necessary for conducting occupational exposure assessments. The knowledge and skills presented are one approach in assessing exposures and hazards through the identification, characterization, estimation, and evaluation of workplace hazards. This body of knowledge establishes the core knowledge elements of the industrial hygiene process in harmony within the convention process of Anticipate, Recognize, Evaluate, Control, and Confirm (ARECC). To volunteer for this team, please fill out and submit the online application by Monday, May 3.
Notice of Annual Business Meeting
AIHA’s annual business meeting will be held online via Zoom on Tuesday, June 1, from 12 to 1 p.m. ET to introduce incoming Board Officers and Directors and address other association businesses. To establish a quorum for this meeting, members are asked to register in advance at https://aiha-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEqduiqrD4oE9O_ZXLEI_y8DKKt89K9BOp5. Individuals who register will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
AIHA announced the 2021 members of the Hamilton Club, an exclusive AIHA partnership program. In mid-April, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Workplace Violence for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act, which is a key step towards providing health care and social workers with the workplace protections they desperately need. AIHA CEO Lawrence Sloan praised the House of Representatives for passing the bill and urged the Senate to take action to reduce workplace violence, save lives, and protect communities by swiftly passing the bill. The Donald E. Cummings Memorial Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the knowledge and practice of the profession of industrial hygiene, demonstrated the practical application of industrial hygiene knowledge to protect worker health, an acknowledgment of these contributions outside of the field of industrial hygiene. Drawing on his three-year tenure as the Chief Ethics Officer for ITT, Alan also serves as the Chair of the Joint Industrial Hygiene Ethics Education Committee, a group that advises ACGIH, AIHA, and BGC. In this position, he has authored a series of Synergist articles on ethics case studies to stimulate thought and conversation about ethics in our profession. Several volunteer groups were contacted to participate as beta tested for a new AIHA-led initiative to create and maintain a national OEHS research-to-practice agenda. This effort is a collaborative venture between AIHA and ACGIH. The new Defining the Science Advisory Group (DTS-AG) includes representatives from both organizations, and beta tester committees have been selected from each to test the new portal for submitting new ideas.
The Local Section Advisory Group is Looking for a Representative
The Local Sections Advisory Group's mission is to promote the continued effectiveness and efficiency of AIHA local sections, to serve as a liaison among local sections, and to provide collective local section positions to the AIHA Board and national AIHA office.
Some responsibilities include:
• Meet collectively at least once a year and periodically check in with all AIHA local section officers
• Hosting quarterly calls w/ local section officers
o Two local section representatives (selected by local section presidents)

Infrastructure, sustainability, and OEHS: these are important topics, and if you’re an AIHA member, you stand at the confluence of all three. Construction links all these concepts, but how often do proposals to improve our nation’s infrastructure focus on construction workers? These proposals grab headlines with the number of jobs they will create, but how often do they include the additional resources that businesses and government programs will need to protect worker health and safety as the volume of construction work increases?
This bill is particularly important considering that rates of workplace violence against health care and social service workers have risen during the COVID-19 pandemic. The bipartisan legislation is supported by health care and social service professionals as well as unions that represent them.
