2022 Board of Directors Nominations Open

AIHA is seeking nominations for four Board of Directors positions vice president, secretary-elect, and two at-large director positions that will be vacated in May 2022. All nominations should be submitted no later than Friday, October 15, 2021. Visit AIHA's website to find more information about submitting Board nominations. Local Sections Advisory Group (LSAG)

An open call process is underway for an individual to serve on the Local Sections Advisory Group (LSAG) as Vice-Chair. Involvement in LSAG is a two-year commitment as the Vice-Chair will advance to become Chair. The deadline for nominations is Monday, November 1, 2021. Please email Thursa La with questions.

AIHA Seeks Fellow Nominations

The AIHA Fellows designation recognizes those who are AIHA members in good standing, have 15 years of continuous Full Membership, and have made recognized contributions to industrial hygiene or related disciplines in at least three of the following areas—also included below is the selection committee calibration of rankings as they review, rank, and recommend new Fellows for approval by the AIHA Board. The deadline to submit is Friday, December 31, 2021.

IAC/AIHA Emerging Economy Micro-Grants Program

The International Affairs Committee’s Emerging Economy Micro-Grants Program has been established to increase understanding and build capacity for occupational hygiene in developing economies around the world. Project proposals will be reviewed by the IAC Micro-grants Subcommittee, weighed against established criteria, and priority ranked.

The sub-committee will weigh available funds budgeted in the current fiscal year against those projects that show the most promise in achieving their stated goals. Final recommendations will be prepared and presented by the CEO to the AIHA Board of Directors for ultimate approval. The deadline to submit is Friday, December 31, 2021.

AIHA Named Awards Nominations

The AIHA Named Awards and Honors recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments and contributions of occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS) professionals of all career stages, who have demonstrated a commitment to preserving, advancing, and ensuring occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS) in the workplace and communities around the world. The deadline to submit is Friday, January 14, 2022.

AIHA Issues Latest Science-Based COVID-19 Back to Work Safely Guidelines to Address Employers Concerns

AIHA is pleased to announce revisions to its complete library of its Back to Work Safely (BTWS) guidelines. The new edition includes multiple updates, including reference to current scientific evidence indicating that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is spread primarily by fine particle airborne transmission; the hierarchy of health and safety controls; and alignment with the CDC’s new recommendations regarding vaccinated individuals.

AIHA Wildfire Disaster Center

As you are likely aware, parts of the country and the world are once again dealing with devasting wildfires. From the Pacific Northwest to the Mediterranean region, communities are facing the dangers of active wildfires and the hazards they leave behind after being extinguished. AIHA's Wildfire Disaster Center has extensive resources on how the general public can protect themselves and their communities after a fire.

Defining the Science

As part of our new Defining the Science initiative, AIHA and ACGIH invited members to participate in the first-ever AIHA/ACGIH Research Idea Brainstorming Roundtable Series, held September 21 and 23. More than 150 members registered to attend. If you were not able to attend, no worries! You can still participate by submitting your research ideas via the online form.

Occupational Health and Safety Scientists Association Lends Support to President Biden’s COVID-19 Action Plan

Protecting the health of workers and their communities by pushing back against the aggressive spread of COVID-19 is among the highest priorities for occupational and environmental health and safety scientists and professionals. JOEH Seeks Case Studies on Controlling COVID-19

The Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene has issued a call for case studies on controls implemented to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Topics of interest include investigations that examined methods to quickly assess ventilation performance, aerosol transport studies in workspaces, flow studies around plexiglass barriers in the workplace, and studies of the effectiveness of local HEPA filtration units in shared spaces. AIHA’s New Strategic Plan: The Community Domain

A previous blog post introduced AIHA’s new strategic plan, which covers the years 2022–24. Both the current plan and the new plan are built around five “domains,” or areas of focus: community, awareness, advancement, and dissemination of knowledge, the integrity of professional practice, and advocacy. Both plans identify strategic goals within each domain and the strategies AIHA will employ to meet those goals. The focus of this blog post is to highlight the first domain: community.

The Brandon Hall Group awarded AIHA the bronze in the Best Use of Games or Simulations for Learning category of the research and analyst firm’s annual Human Capital Management Excellence Awards. Open Call: Seeking Volunteers for the Serving Changing Workforce Working Group

AIHA is seeking members to serve on CPAG’s Serving the Changing Workforce Working Group. This working group is adjacent to the Content Portfolio Advisory Group (CPAG) and focuses on advancing the serving the changing workforce content priority. You don’t have to be a CPAG member to join this group; you just need to have an interest in the changing workforce! The deadline to apply is October 31.

Consider Recognizing a Peer by Making Donation to the Foundation

Thinking of how to recognize an IH or OEHS peer? How about making a donation in their name to the Foundation? Donations are tax-deductible and will go towards supporting deserving IH/OEHS students in their pursuit of making a difference in the profession.

Scholarship Time

The Call for Scholarship Applications will launch in mid-October and applicants will have until Monday, January 31, 2022, to submit. To view the eligibility requirements of receiving an AIHF scholarship, please visit the following site. Students who are not enrolled in any of the applicable programs/schools are still eligible to apply. To qualify, a school administrator must complete a separate application justifying why their program/students should be considered for an AIHF scholarship. The deadline to submit a school application form is Friday, January 7.
