AIHA’s Back to Work Safely Public Education Initiative Wins Golden Trumpet Award from Publicity Club of Chicago
AIHA, the association for occupational health and safety science professionals, and the strategic communications agency CS-Effect are pleased to announce that AIHA’s Back to Work Safely initiative has received a 2021 Golden Trumpet award from Publicity Club of Chicago, in the COVID-19 External Response category.
AIHA started the Back to Work Safely campaign at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, as a response to the misinformation on personal protective equipment (PPE), decontamination, and indoor air quality.
“We are very honored to receive this award in recognition of the work of the volunteers and staff of AIHA. The initiative was developed to provide guidance to small businesses about the proper use of PPE, ventilation, and disinfection, and to educate employers and consumers about how to operate safely in the workplace amidst a pandemic,” says Sue Marchese, AIHA Managing Director of Marketing and Communications. “What started with just seven guidance documents, has now evolved into 27 guidance documents aimed at 27 different business sectors, available in English and Spanish.”
AIHA worked with the Chicago-based agency CS-Effect to effectively communicate its message through media outreach, social media, digital assets, and industry-specific resources and guidelines, as well as connect AIHA experts with journalists and reporters covering COVID-19 stories.
“This campaign grew and evolved as quickly as the pandemic itself. The unique expertise at AIHA provided invaluable guidance during a time when businesses needed it most. We are honored to have helped share those messages through strategic communications, so businesses in communities across the country could reopen safely,” explained Candice Warltier, Founding Partner, CS-Effect.
As a result of this close cooperation, in 2020 the Back to Work Safely website had more than 168,000 unique views, the guidance documents were downloaded more than 1.5 million times, featured in over 60 stories in national and international media outlets, and even referenced by the CDC, US Chamber of Commerce and governors’ offices throughout the country.
As the country moves forward with safe re-openings of businesses, schools, offices, and other workplaces, AIHA’s Back to Work Safely continues to be at the forefront in developing guidelines and recommendations to protect workers’ health and safety. In fact, AIHA will be releasing the 2nd edition of these guidelines to keep up with the evolving science related to the airborne nature of the SARS CoV-2 virus, mutations of the virus, and vaccines.
