The Academy of Industrial Hygiene recently released “Core Competencies for the Practice of Industrial/Occupational Hygiene,” a document that identifies the 17 core competencies necessary in the industrial hygiene profession. The document is a joint effort of the Academy, AIHA®, ACGIH®, and the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). The AIHA Academic Special Interest Group also made significant contributions.
Fundamental educational and professional practice requirements for industrial hygiene are established by ABIH and focus primarily on early career professionals. There has been very little mutually agreed on guidance for practicing industrial hygiene professionals, industrial/occupational hygiene technicians, and paraprofessionals. This core competency document addresses the need for guidance and presents the level of competency needed for each level of practice.
