In Memoriam: Steve M. Hays

​AIHA member Steve M. Hays, PE, CIH, FACEC, FAIHA, passed away on Sept. 28. He was 66. Hays worked to bridge the gap between industrial hygiene and sound engineering practices for more than 30 years. AIHA recently recognized Hays’ leadership in the field of asbestos exposure and his significant contributions to the industrial hygiene literature on the subject with the Donald E. Cummings Memorial Award. Hays was honored during the Mark of Excellence Awards Breakfast at AIHce EXP 2017 in Seattle, Wash.

He received numerous other awards over the course of his career, including the 2012 Mortimer M. Marshall Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Institute of Building Sciences, which recognizes Hays’ contributions to the field of building sciences through his dedication to the research and work of NIBS.

Hays was founding partner and chairman emeritus of the Nashville-based Gobbell Hays Partners (GHP) Environmental + Architecture firm.
