Join AIHA's Cannabis Industry Health and Safety Task Force

Posted September 6, 2017

The AIHA Government Relations Group has set up a Cannabis Industry Health and Safety Task Force to study the hazards, controls, and other health and safety issues associated with the growing number of workers in the cannabis industry. Currently, 29 states and the District of Columbia have legalized medicinal cannabis and 8 states have legalized it recreationally for adults over the age of 21. Medicinal cannabis is also legal in Canada, and certain provinces have announced the legalization of recreational cannabis beginning mid-2018. This emerging industry will result in thousands of new jobs where worker health and safety might be impacted.

The goals of the Cannabis Industry Health and Safety Task Force are as follows:

  1. identify the different sectors within the cannabis industry (cultivation, manufacturing, distribution, laboratory accreditation)
  2. identify the different hazards, controls, and related issues within the cannabis industry (such as exposure to chemical, biological, and physical agents; ventilation; biological monitoring; and analytical methods)
  3. identify  industry standards and best management practices currently occurring in each respective sector of the industry
  4. identify regulatory standards currently in place in states where medicinal and/or recreational cannabis is legal
  5. prepare a summary of findings to present to the AIHA Board of Directors so that AIHA can take an informed position for the protection of workers in this industry
  6. prepare one or more documents based on the task force’s findings for publication (possibly a white paper or journal article)

AIHA seeks interested members to join and contribute to achieving the goals of this task force, preferably individuals who have experience in the cannabis industry or related fields, including agribusiness, food or pharmaceutical manufacturing, laboratory accreditation, regulatory standards (specific to cannabis), distribution/fleet safety, and biological monitoring.

Individuals interested in joining this task force should email Mark Ames, AIHA Director of Government Relations; Rob Kleinerman, CIH, chair of the Cannabis Industry Health and Safety Task Force; or Malendia Maccree, RBP, CIH, vice-chair of the task force.
